The Selzthal station is an important railway junction of the Austrian Federal Railways in Selzthal in Upper Styria , which connects the continuous Rudolfsbahn with the Pyhrnbahn and the Ennstalbahn .

Rail connections

A passenger train leaves Selzthal station

Long-distance trains run via Selzthal between Graz and Bischofshofen and beyond. Selzthal is also a regional transport hub, which connects conurbations such as the Linz area , the Liezen area and the Leoben area .

Freight volume

Since rail lines from four directions meet in Selzthal, there is also a lot of freight traffic. Most freight trains only stop because of a change of driver or an inspection. Some are split or re-queued. As in many other large train stations in Austria, shunting has decreased a little in Selzthal over the past 60 years. An ÖBB 2070 has been responsible for shunting the locomotives since the locomotives were commissioned .

history

When the Rudolfsbahn was extended from Weyer to Selzthal in 1872, the Selzthal station was created. This created a village around the station that served as a place of residence for the railway workers. When the Pyhrnbahn was completed in 1906, the station was converted into an island station .

In recent times, the Selzthal station has lost more and more importance due to the almost complete cessation (only 1 pair of trains on Saturdays and Sundays) of passenger traffic on the Gesäusebahn (a section of the Rudolfsbahn).

architecture

The island platform with its historical roof construction is partly designed as a terminus station

The island platform forms the central element of the Selzthal train station. It is roofed with a generous red painted steel construction, which is under monument protection ( list entry ). There is a building with a waiting room, toilets and office space on the island platform. The actual station building (it is located on the edge of the station) is not a listed building.

Between the exit of the Rudolfsbahn and Ennstalbahn there is a also listed round locomotive shed with a turntable . This was the point of view of ÖBB nostalgia into the 21st century .

Selzthal loop

The Selzthal loop project envisages building a 2.3 km loop from the Ennstalbahn at km 96.4 towards the Rudolfsbahn at km 136.6. As a result, trains could be run between Salzburg and Graz without having to crash in Selzthal station .

The municipality of Selzthal and its local politics is against the construction of the loop, as this would make the Selzthal location less important, but the project is approved by the state politicians of all parties. The € 56 million loop is included in the ÖBB master plan until 2014.
