history

After the introduction of the Reformation in Upper Lusatia , a Catholic community in Löbau did not emerge again until the middle of the 19th century through immigration of Silesian and Bohemian working-class families. The late medieval hospital church Heilig Geist was initially used as a place of worship until it was closed due to dilapidation. After that, the congregation met temporarily in a dance hall. A church building committee was founded, which included personalities such as the button manufacturer Johann Nepomuk Ernst (1850–1923) from Hainspach , who was later awarded the Order of Gregorius , and the businessman Rudolf Müller .

After a plot of land for the church, parsonage and school was acquired northwest of the historic town center, the congregation received permission through relationships with the Prague Benedictines to use the architectural design free of charge that P. Gislenus Bethune for the Sacred Heart Church in Selzthal in Styria ( built 1888-1891) had made. Bruno Berthold took over the construction management in Löbau . The foundation stone was laid on September 21, 1890. The church was consecrated by Bishop Ludwig Wahl on September 11, 1892, the day before the Feast of the Name of the Virgin .

The Marienkirche in Löbauer was not affected by the Second World War. After the Second Vatican Council , it was redesigned according to the liturgical reform. From 1978 to 1988, during the GDR era, extensive renovation took place.

Today (2013) 1,900 Catholics belong to the parish, which stretches from Weißenberg to Großhennersdorf with three branch churches .

The parish church of Holy Name of Mary is a hall church with extruded, polygonal closing chorus in the south. The proportions and wall design correspond to the late classicist round arch style, but the arches are slightly pointed. The four bays of the nave are provided with twin windows on both sides and are separated inside by flat pillars . The slender square bell tower, crowned by four gables and a pointed helmet, stands on the western choir wall.

Furnishing

The original furnishings of the Marienkirche in Löbau have been preserved and restored as a total work of art. The inner walls and the pointed barrel vault are richly decorated with figural and ornamental, sometimes illusionistic painting. The motifs are predominantly Marian . Parts of this painting as well as the stained glass windows come from Carl Ludwig Türcke (1841–1909) and his workshop. The altars, the pulpit, the baptismal font and the pictures of the Stations of the Cross were made by the Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt , Munich. The organ was built by the Hermann Eule company in 1913 and consecrated on December 7th of the same year. It comprises 14 registers on two manuals and a pedal .

The large ceiling painting in the apse depicts the Assumption of Mary and was also made by the Türcke company from Zittau. Its style corresponds to the romanticism that was prevalent at the time.

Until the renovations after the Second Vatican Council, the church also had two side altars, which were consecrated to the Mother of God Mary and Joseph. Parts of the Marian altar were used for the sacrament altar on which mass is celebrated today. The two wooden statues now rest on simple pedestals in front of the chancel.

The pulpit was made by the Mayer'schen Hofanstalt and once had a sound cover. Until the church was rebuilt, it hung on the first wall pillar on the right side of the nave. Today it is on the steps to the altar.

For the 100th anniversary of the parish fair, a longstanding parishioner donated a large chandelier and seven other wall sconces made of Bohemian crystal.

The high altar was the place of mass until the Second Vatican Council and houses relics of St. Martyr Stephen and St. Ursula. In the middle is the tabernacle and above it is a cross. To the right and left of it depictions show scenes from the life of Mary. The altar is also decorated with statues of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Elisabeth of Thuringia .

On the right and left of the walls in the nave there is a fourteen-station Way of the Cross .

In 1894 the community acquired a stone font with a wooden cover from the Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt in Munich, on which a statue of John the Baptist is attached. Its octagonal shape symbolizes all directions in which the word of God should spread.
