  • The Voralpen Autobahn was a planned, but never realized, Autobahn in the Upper and Lower Austrian Alpine Foreland .

    Routing

    The motorway should branch off from the West Autobahn in the Sattledt area in Upper Austria and lead via Kremsmünster , Bad Hall , Sierning  and Steyr to the city ​​of Haag or Amstetten  in Lower Austria, where it would again merge with the West Autobahn. The Enns and thus the state border was to be crossed northeast of Dietachdorf  near Steyr. Connection points were planned at Rohr im Kremstal (connection point Kremstal ), Sierning and Unterwolfern , among others . At Dietachdorf, a link was planned at the Steyr junction with the planned S 37 Steyrer Schnellstraße (which today corresponds to the Steyrer Straße, which has no intersections ) from Steyr to Enns . The 50 km long motorway would have run roughly parallel to the B122 Voralpen Straße .

    history

    The plan for a “pre-alpine motorway” was developed in 1971 by the traffic planner Josef Dorfwirth as part of a traffic study for the Upper Austrian central area. In October of the same year, the Upper and Lower Austrian provincial governments asked the Federal Ministry for Buildings and Technology to commission a study on a national road connection between Sattledt and Amstetten. This was presented in 1975, but the takeover of the autobahn into the Federal Roads Act , a prerequisite for federal funding, was outstanding and was never implemented. In 1979 a “general project” to be financed by the state of Upper Austria was worked out, but was probably shelved in the 1980s either because of the estimated costs of around three billion schillings or for political reasons because of resistance from the affected communities in favor of other projects.

    The reasons for the construction of the motorway included the shortening of the Salzburg – Vienna route (by around 25 km compared to the A1 via Linz ), the relief of the western motorway between Sattledt and Amstetten, especially in the Linz area, and the better connection between Steyr and Called surrounding area. It was also hoped that it would have positive effects on tourism in the foothills of the Alps.

    The designation A 26 intended for the pre-Alps autobahn is now used for the Linz autobahn  , which is under construction .
