State roads in Lower Austria are marked with an L or B in front . In contrast to federal roads A or S or state roads B , the abbreviations for state roads L are usually not shown on traffic signs . State roads with one to three-digit names indicate a greater importance in the road network. The designation of higher-ranking state roads as Landeshauptstraße ( LH ), previously used in several federal states, was abolished in 1999.

In 1866 the first 17 roads in Lower Austria were declared state roads. The state road law of April 19, 1894 no longer uses the term state road, the previous state roads have been converted into first class district roads.

In the State Road Act of July 12, 1956, the 172 most important state roads are designated as state main roads and listed in a street directory.

The state roads of the second category are added by the amending law of June 26, 1958. There are a few hundred streets that are numbered with a four-digit code. Lower Austria has an exceptionally large number of provincial roads, as almost every road that leaves a local area is declared a provincial road: These are not particularly important connections, but simply not municipal roads . Due to the hilly nature of the area, this affects almost every road that connects towns beyond an agricultural access route. These streets are also not named - in their capacity as state roads.

The other state roads (four-digit: L 1001 – L 1263, L 2001 – L 2316, L 3001 – L 3168, L 4001 – L 4189, L 5001 – L 5380, L 6001 – L 6317, L 7001 – L 7318, L 8000 –L 8310) are small local connections with no supra-local significance, which are not mentioned here (the fact that every major road that crosses a - often only former - municipal boundary is under state administration is a Lower Austrian peculiarity).
