Altenwörth (from ahd. Uarid , mhd. Worth : an island lined with trees) is a village and a cadastral community of Kirchberg am Wagram in Lower Austria. The village near a large Danube power plant forms a dual place with the neighboring Gigging .
geography
Altenwörth is located on a wide oxbow lake north of the Danube at a prominent bend in the river, in which an elongated flat island ( gravel bank ) was created. Kamp , Mühlkamp and Krems flow into the old arm, which is 300 m wide here and is fed by a relief channel of the Danube .
The Altenwörth power plant is located on the river itself , the most powerful Austrian Danube power plant built between 1973 and 1979 , which belongs to the Lower Danube plant group . At the power station the Traisen flows into the Danube from the south , which probably contributed to the formation of the eponymous gravel island off Altenwörth.
Local area and inhabitants
The built-up local area extends along the arm of the Danube and measures around 1.2 by 0.5 km without the neighboring village of Gigging. An independent municipality until 1972, it was then affiliated to Kirchberg am Wagram . In 1991 Altenwörth-Gigging had 309 inhabitants.
history
Altenwörth is the only village on the left bank of the Danube between Krems and Tulln (Lower Austria). The small town is located in the middle of the Danube meadows , a retreat for many rare animal and plant species.
The first church foundation was established in 865 by the Salzburg Bishop Adalwin . In 1014, Bishop Sigismar von Kremsmünster (Sigismaresweret) founded a wooden church, which soon became the original Passau church for the entire Weinviertel. The first mention of sigismaris weride took place in 1011 in a certificate from Heinrich II for Absdorf .
In 1082 the battle of Mailberg broke out and the church was devastated. Also always affected by the many floods, it was decided to rebuild “on the Wagram” ( St. Stefan am Wagram ) in 1090 . The parish church on the Danube still existed, but was looked after by Kirchberg pastoral care.
In 1784 Altenwörth became its own parish through Emperor Joseph II and in 1786 the church was rebuilt.
Altenwörth has been in the parish association with Kirchberg am Wagram and Ottenthal for several years .
From 1600 Altenwörth was a transshipment point for salt transports from the Salzkammergut to Moravia. The alluvial forests, with their abundance of wood, in turn meant that the first sawmill in the Stockerau-Krems area was set up as a steam sawmill. Cut goods, roof trusses, carpentry work went into the whole area. Ship mills were operated in the Mühlwasser and were destroyed by fire in 1875 and 1882. The capacity can be seen in his craftsmen. The place was home to a blacksmith's shop, a Wagner, cooper, butcher, baker, tailor, shoemaker, barber, three inns, two sawmills, three timber dealers, a food shop, 2 department stores and a carpentry shop. From 1872 to 1886 there was a ship station for Danube shipping in Altenwörth
Today, Altenwörth is also associated with the Danube power plant , which was built between 1970 and 1975. In the course of the construction in 1975 a ship was found in the river bed, the remains are in the shipping museum of Spitz (Wachau).
On January 2, 1972, the municipality of Altenwörth was incorporated into the larger municipality of Kirchberg am Wagram, despite the appeals at the Constitutional Court .
In 2002 the village was hit by floods from the Kamp River, during which the dam had to be partially blown up.
