  • The Nord / Weinviertel Autobahn A5 (formerly just Nord Autobahn ) is a motorway in Lower Austria and part of the European Route 461 . It begins at the Eibesbrunn junction and leads through the Weinviertel to the state border near Drasenhofen , from where you can reach Brno via the Dálnice 52 via the Czech road network . From the junction or motorway triangle Eibesbrunn there is a connection to Vienna and Korneuburg via the Vienna outer ring expressway S1 .

    Plans for a high-speed road between Vienna and Brno have existed for decades. The Reichsautobahn Vienna – Wroclaw was planned in 1938 and partially built by 1942; it provided a connection between these two cities through Czech territory near Brno. But only a small part of it west of Brno was completed and is still in operation today. The rest of the buildings, which were located exclusively on Czech territory, fell into disrepair during the Iron Curtain era .

    A later attempt to connect the two cities in 1996 brought the R52 expressway from Brno to Pohořelice on the Czech side , while the northern motorway project on the Austrian side was temporarily postponed. Planning for the A 5 was only started again as a result of the EU's eastward expansion and the associated increased volume of traffic. In parts of the southern section, which was opened in 2010, construction was carried out using the existing Brünner Straße B 7. Here, a new, narrower route was built for the B 7, running parallel to the A 5. On the Czech side, the extension of today's four-lane D52 from Pohořelice to Mikulov should guarantee the connection to Brno.

    Traffic volumes

    The Nord / Weinviertel Autobahn is the most important traffic axis from Vienna to the north. For 2020, around 64,000 vehicles / 24 hours were forecast for the southern section at Wolkersdorf, around 52,000 vehicles / 24 hours for the central section in front of Schrick and around 23,000 vehicles / 24 hours at the Drasenhofen border point.

    The global financial and economic crisis brought a decline in the volume of traffic, especially in truck traffic, which is lucrative for toll revenues. According to Asfinag continuous censuses, around 27,800 vehicles per 24 hours were measured at Wolkersdorf, and around 22,200 vehicles per 24 hours in front of Schrick. These numbers are about 20% lower than the original 2006 forecasts.

    Eibesbrunn - Schrick

    The groundbreaking ceremony for the southern section of the motorway from Großebersdorf-Eibesbrunn to Gaweinstal-Schrick took place on February 26, 2007. This section of the North / Weinviertel motorway is part of the package alongside the S 1 -East and -West and the S 2Süßenbrunn bypass ” 1 ”of the PPP Eastern Region , the first part of the motorway in Austria to be realized in a public-private partnership . In addition to the construction, the companies around the main contractor, Bonaventura Straßenerrichtungs-GmbH , will also take over the pre-financing and the motorway operation for the next three decades.

    For 255 million euros, 23.5 km of motorway including a tunnel , four full and three half junctions , five culverts , six green bridges and 21  road bridges were built and five bridge conversions were carried out.

    The section from the Eibesbrunn junction to the Wolkersdorf- Süd junction is six-lane, the remaining four-lane. In the uphill area between the Ulrichskirchen and Wolkersdorf-Nord junctions there is a third lane in the direction of Brno .

    After a construction period of 37 months, the southern section of the A5 was opened to traffic on January 31, 2010. Until the section to Poysbrunn was completed, the A 5 merged with the existing B 7 at Schrick . At the Hochleithen junction , a rest station with a fast-service restaurant and a gas station was built, which went into operation in autumn 2010. When it was opened, road bans for trucks over 3.5 tons were banned across the board on low-ranking roads along the A 5 , in order to prevent transit traffic through the towns and to prevent toll refugees.

    Schrick - Poysdorf North

    For the section from Gaweinstal -Schrick to Poysdorf - Poysbrunn , the original environmental impact assessment was completed in November 2009 with the EIA notification, an amendment procedure ran from 2011 to 2013. In June 2010, Asfinag was able to agree on a sale price with the landowners. However, this is not financed through a PPP model, but from funds from an economic stimulus package from the federal government .

    The costs for the two sections from Schrick to the state border with a total length of 33.5 km were estimated at 324 million euros in September 2013.

    The Schrick - Poysbrunn section was approved by the Lower Austrian provincial government in December 2011.

    The construction work was originally supposed to start in winter 2013/14 and be completed in 2016. However, the first clearing was not carried out until the beginning of 2014, in May 2014 major installations of the EVN (electricity and gas lines) were relocated, in October 2014 the building permit became legally binding after the last pending complaint was rejected by the Administrative Court. The construction work actually began with a one-year delay in April 2015 and was completed in December 2017. It was opened to traffic on December 8, 2017.

    A new construction in bridge construction, which was developed jointly with the Vienna University of Technology , found its way into the 112 meter long Satzengraben bridge. Instead of expansion joints between the concrete parts, 20 to 30 concrete elements were connected with ropes made of a special glass fiber material, so that only millimeter-sized gaps are created that are covered by the asphalt above. This is intended to significantly reduce maintenance costs.

    On July 27, 2018, a traffic control point was opened north of Schrick in the direction of Vienna, which is the first in Austria to be equipped with a scale that allows trucks to pass these at up to 25 kilometers per hour, which can shorten the inspection times.

    Poysdorf-Nord - state border

    The environmental impact assessment was initiated in 2013 for the northern section from Poysdorf- Nord to the state border near Drasenhofen. Due to the low volume of traffic and the not fully clarified connection to the Czech D52, the section was initially only built as a two-lane bypass road to relieve the municipality of Drasenhofen, which was originally supposed to open no later than one year after the opening of the North / Weinviertel motorway to Poysbrunn. The full expansion of the four-lane motorway to the Czech border depends on the progress of the adjacent Czech motorway project D52 and is currently unclear.

    The construction work was originally supposed to start in 2016/2017; the opening to traffic was planned for 2018. The construction of the Poysbrunn - Drasenhofen section was delayed by several appeals to the Federal Administrative Court. Construction of the Drasenhofen bypass began on April 3, 2018, and was opened to public transport on September 8, 2019. The Drasenhofen bypass is part of the A5 and is therefore subject to a vignette and toll.

    Motorway Police

    The Nord / Weinviertel Autobahn is monitored by the Autobahn Police Inspectorate (API) Großkrut . This was created by transforming the former Großkrut border police, which had become obsolete after Austria joined the Schengen area . Until the northern section of the A5 is cleared, the Brünner Straße B 7 between Schrick and Drasenhofen also falls under the responsibility of API Großkrut. The API is also responsible for the Vienna outer ring expressway S 1 between Korneuburg and Vienna. In order to ensure quick access to the southern section of the area of ​​responsibility, API Großkrut officials and vehicles are also stationed at the Deutsch-Wagram police station. The API Großkrut has a total of 38 posts. In a separate department, submissive API officials are also responsible as AGM forces for compensatory measures and the fight against crime.

    Archaeological sites

    In the area of ​​Walterskirchen, one of the cadastral communities of Poysdorf , a settlement from the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC was found during excavations. Exposed. The results of the excavations were exhibited in the Weinstadt Museum in Poysdorf. Between June 2003 and December 2005 extensive excavations took place in the area of Gaweinstal , whereby an area of ​​50,000 m² was worked. Settlements from a period of over 1400 years were uncovered. These come from the Neolithic , Baden culture and the early Bronze Age . Barrows from the Middle Bronze Age have also been discovered. The first major settlement activity could be observed in the younger Iron Age , although only a few findings that were scattered over the entire investigated area were preserved undisturbed. A large part of the finds could be assigned to a Germanic settlement - presumably marcomanni and quadrupeds - which are characterized primarily by sunken huts, post pits of multi-aisled houses and deep storage pits .
