Rohrwald

The meadow stream in the Rohrwald

The Rohrwald provides a total area of about 24 square kilometers of the Danube wetlands and the Ernstbrunner Forest 's third largest closed forest complex of the district Korneuburg .

The pipe forest extends over the communities Harmannsdorf , Leobendorf , Leitzersdorf and Niederhollabrunn , with the largest part in the cadastral community of Rückersdorf.

The reed forest lies on a foothill of the flysch zone and is therefore rather untypical for the Weinviertel, criss-crossed by several streams. In the poorly forested, agriculturally intensively used Weinviertel, the Rohrwald has a high ecological value and an important function as a local recreation area.

geology

Geologically, the western peaks of the Rohrwald, which are no longer forested and therefore provide good all-round visibility - the Waschberg and Michelberg - belong to the Waschberg zone and Weinviertel cliff zone (Lower Austrian Inselbergschwelle), which over the Leiser Berge , Falkenstein and the Moravian Karst north of Nikolsburg (Mikulov ) connect the Alps with the Carpathian Mountains . The Weinviertel cliff zone and thus also parts of the Rohrwald belong to the Natura 2000 and FFH protected area Weinviertel cliff zone . The bedrock of the area are schisty clays, clay marl and Greifenstein sandstone, all of which are more or less overlaid with loess. Old and new quarries show limestone, in which the remains of ancient animals can be found.

The Rohrwaldzug runs parallel to the Bisamberg range . The Rohrbachtal divides it into two trains, the Kreuzensteinerzug and the Waschberg-Michelberg-Zug.

The Kreuzensteinzug is formed from the Schliefberg (246 m), the Kreuzenstein (266 m) crowned by the Kreuzenstein Castle , the Toblerberg (355 m), the Daberg, the Karnabrunn Kirchberg (358 m) and the Galgenberg (398 m).

The Waschberg-Michelberg-Zug runs parallel to the Kreuzensteinzug and is formed from the Waschberg (388 m), the Michelberg (409 m), the Höchberg (347 m) and the Steinberg (375 m).

Vegetation and use

The dry, summer warm Pannonian climate accordingly, is oak-hornbeam forest , the natural vegetation cover. In addition, bird cherries, service berries, hornbeams and locally also red beeches make up the upper class of the middle forest stands. In the lower strata, hornbeam, oak, winter linden, field maple and hazel shoots are most common; in some stands, trembling aspen, birch and willow are also involved to a greater extent. In Rohrwald grow rare orchids such as the broadleaf helleborine ( Cephalanthera damasonium ), the purple - and military orchid ( Orchis purpurea and O. militaris ), the white and greenish-butterfly orchid ( Platanthera bifolia and P. montana ) and the lady's slipper ( Cypripedium calceolus ).

The areas owned by agricultural communities have been managed as medium-sized forests (rash forests) for several thousand years in order to supply the population with firewood. In the case of the areas in large estate, the aim is to convert them into a forest-like structure by increasing the rotation time. In addition to the Rohrbach , the Wiesenbach and several smaller feeders flow through the forest. The small streams are largely taken up by hay meadows, and in part, stream floodplain forests dominated by broken willows are formed.

The streams, which are rather untypical for the Weinviertel, increase the habitat suitability for the black stork. A large nest discovered in 2010 can be assigned to the black stork with high probability.

A total of 46 bird species were recorded as safe or possible breeding birds through breeding season observations, with the greatest diversity of species being found in the Bachau. Five of the forty-six species observed are particularly endangered and are also on the Red List of Endangered Species . These are the saker falcon , honey buzzard , goat milker , wryneck and the middle woodpecker . According to BirdLife , the cuckoo that has also been observed is one of the regularly endangered breeding birds. In 2010 a large nest, unfortunately sheltered, was discovered, which is very likely to be assigned to the black stork .

Due to its proximity to Vienna, the Rohrwald is also an important local recreation area and popular excursion destination.

The so-called "Schauerkreuz" is located at a striking intersection of eight paths . On May 16, 1878, a wooden cross was inaugurated at this point. Year after year there is a procession to ward off bad weather and hail from the Harmannsdorf church to the Schauerkreuz. In 1903 a stone monument was erected.

A village called Wielandsdorf was settled in the Rohrwald in the 15th century . Towards the end of the 15th century, the population fled to Rückersdorf to seek protection. The settlement was left to decay. According to contemporary witnesses, some of the foundation walls of this settlement were still visible until 1970. The remains of the Wielensdorf settlement are listed under the name Wüstung Wilantisdorf.

The so-called " Sweden Caves " are earth stalls made in loess . According to a legend, in the 17th century during the Swedish Wars they served as a shelter and hiding place for the residents of the surrounding villages.

The Michelberg has a long history as a place of worship and is a popular destination in the immediate vicinity of Vienna.

The Jakobsweg Weinviertel and two hiking trails (Rohrwaldweg 633, Kreuzensteiner Rundwanderweg 636) cross the Rohrwald.

There are two cycle paths through the forest: the themed cycle path " Legendary - Around the Castle Kreuzenstein " and the mountain bike route " Michelberg-Runde ", which opened in 2011 .

The so-called " beautiful column " is a plague or trinity column over five meters high. It was built in 1730 out of gratitude for a riding accident in 1729 that was unharmed at this point. See also the list of listed objects in Harmannsdorf
