Culture and sights

Main square: Fischer-von-Erlach church and Marian column.
  • Parish church Großweikersdorf : The parish church was built from 1733 to 1740 according to plans by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach in the style of early classicism under the direction of the Austrian master builder Johann Baptist Martinelli . Thus this church is one of the three sacred buildings of the famous architect "Fischer von Erlach the Younger" (in addition to the further construction of the Karlskirche in Vienna and the parish church of Safov in South Moravia). The Großweikersdorfer parish church of Heiliger Georg has the third highest church tower in Lower Austria, but due to lack of funds it was not completed until around 100 years later in neo-baroque style according to plans by Leopold Ernst , who was also master builder of St. Stephen's in Vienna. The richly decorated late baroque tabernacle structure was also made to a design by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach. The high altar painting Martyrdom and Transfiguration of St. George (signed Martinus Altomonte 1734) is by Martino Altomonte and was in a deplorable condition after a problematic restoration in 1937 and due to a leaky apse window. The original luminosity of the important picture was restored in 2016 through an extensive restoration commissioned by the Archdiocese of Vienna (Laboratory Josef Haspel and Margaritha Wolff Metternich ). The right side altarpiece, the Lintel of St. Nepomuk, is by Martin Johann Schmidt , known as Kremser Schmidt (1749), the left altarpiece, Saint Ivo von Chartres, is by Carl Aigen from the Paul Troger school (1740). In front of this left side altar sheet is a replica of the miraculous image of the Brno Madonna (1730), which was donated by the financier of the church, Adrian Wenzel Graf Enckevoirt (1660–1738).
    • In front of the church there is an artistically executed wrought iron gate from 1740 created by master Johann Adam Kühn .
    • The Holy Theater , which shows the Descent from the Cross with holy women and John in a rock grotto, was created by a member of the artist family Galli da Bibiena, a family of stage painters known at the time of Maria Theresa . Only a few of this type of holy theater still exist in Austria.
    • The late baroque pulpit with a canopy was made by Jakob Rechländer (1758).
    • The font from 1725 was created from marble by the Eggenburg sculptor Johann Georg Schmutzer .
    • A stone memorial plaque shows the relief of the Roman Catholic priest, educator, philosopher and resistance fighter Heinrich Maier, who was born in Großweikersdorf on February 16, 1908 and executed in Vienna on March 22, 1945 .
  • Pfarrhof Großweikersdorf : The rectory, rebuilt in 1727 after a fire, has a simple pouring box and a pigeon pigeon in the yard.
  • Pleyel Museum : The Pleyel Museum was opened in 1998 and is dedicated to the life and work of the Viennese classical composer , piano manufacturer, musician, conductor and publisher Ignaz Josef Pleyel (1757–1831). Concerts are also held regularly.
