Baumgarten am Wagram is a small town north of the Wagram in the southwest of the Weinviertel . The village is widely known for its viticulture and the associated Heuriger. The village is also the cadastral parish of the market community Großweikersdorf and a branch of the parish Großweikersdorf and belongs to the Tulln district in Lower Austria.

history

Valuable finds point to a settlement as far back as the more recent Paleolithic. It is unclear whether the region was permanently settled. Various Germanic tribes lived here in Roman times.

The Marcomanni settled in the area around 400 AD . The Avars invaded around AD 600 . What is certain is that simple farmers had settled here in Avar times and practiced simple arable farming. With the Avar campaigns of Charlemagne , the country was incorporated into the Franconian Empire. Around 1050, the settlement fell under the rule of the Babenbergs , who laid the foundation for today's Austria. Baumgarten am Wagram was first mentioned as "Poungarten" in a document from 1316. This document can be viewed in the Lower Austrian State Archives in St. Pölten. In the course of the Middle Ages, some businesses also settled in Baumgarten.

In 1763 the village chapel was built, which is consecrated to Mary (mother of Jesus) . During this time 275 inhabitants were counted.

From modern times until the revolution in 1848, Baumgarten am Wagram belonged to the Grafenegg estate. The place, like the whole area, was badly affected by the Thirty Years' War and the Napoleonic War . After 1848 Baumgarten am Wagram was part of the market town of Großweikersdorf, but could become its own municipality in 1891. In 1850 there were 250 residents. In 1909 an elementary school was even created. After the First World War , the number of inhabitants fell to 235.

In 1931 the Baumgarten volunteer fire brigade was founded , and it still exists today. In the course of the Second World War , 12 village members died. In 1965 the village's primary school was closed. In 1967 Baumgarten am Wagram was incorporated as a cadastral community of Großweikersdorf. The war memorial, in honor of those who fell in the world wars, was erected in 1968. As a result of strong emigration, the population fell to 142 in 1967. Since 1971 the population has increased again slightly. In 1996 the Hummer department store was closed. In 2008, 184 inhabitants could be counted who live in 90 houses.

The establishment of the Baumgarten Club (local festivals, local beautification) in 1996, the renovation of the local chapel in 2008 and the establishment of a youth club brought new cultural impulses.

Since 2009, Leopold Spielauer has been the mayor of the market town of Großweikersdorf.
