Atzenbrugg is an Austrian market town in the Tulln district in Lower Austria with 3109 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

geography

Atzenbrugg is located in the Perschling valley , where it emerges into the Tullnerfeld . The district capital Tulln is 18 kilometers away by road. The area of ​​the market town covers 25.94 square kilometers, of which around 5.39 percent are forested.

history

Named after Azzo from Kuenring , who is said to have built the first bridge over the "raging" Perschling here (around 1100) . After the Kuenringers died out, the properties went to the Melk Abbey and for a while it was a sought-after area, as can be seen from two castles (one of which was a hunting lodge belonging to Empress Maria Theresa ).

  • Atzenbrugg Castle : Former country castle. The building history of the castle goes back to the early 12th century. Today the castle houses a memorial and a museum dedicated to the life and work of the composer Franz Schubert .
  • Parish church Heiligeneich: Church from the 14th century with an extension in the basilica style. Frescoes by Joseph Adam Ritter von Mölk .
  • Turkish Cross: According to legend, in August 1683 the inhabitants of Hütteldorf fled from the approaching Turkish army in caves in the marrow. The Turks noticed this hiding place by a cock crow and murdered most of the refugees. Only an old sick man survived because he stayed in the village. After a rain, the victims' blood flowed over two ravines to the road that connects Hütteldorf with Heiligeneich. There is a red and a black cross as a reminder. The Turkish cross in the Markgraben has existed since 1983 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Turkish distress.
  • Diamond Country Club: Golf club on the former industrial site with restaurant and accommodation in Moosbierbaum, where tournaments are held every year.

The community is home to a total of three train stations that are connected to the S40 S-Bahn line of the ÖBB. Atzenbrugg-Heiligeneich is home to an office of the Red Cross. There are also three volunteer fire brigades in Heiligeneich, Atzenbrugg and Trasdorf. The community also has numerous doctors, including a general practitioner and a dentist.

In Heiligeneich there is a kindergarten as well as a primary and secondary school. There is also a private school.
