Azzo von Gobatsburg († around 1100) is considered to be the progenitor of the Kuenring family . The first written mention comes from the year 1059. The epithet "von Gobatsburg" appears for the first time in 1074.

According to a legend, Azzo is said to have rushed to the aid of the Margrave of Austria Leopold II and was appointed marshal by him after a victory over the Bohemia. However, it is more likely that this story was brought up when the Kuenringers had already become an important ministerial family .

His sons were Ansalm, Nizzo and Albero.
