The "digital route toll " (formerly video toll ) is a system from ASFINAG ( Autobahn and Schnellstraßen-Finanz-Aktiengesellschaft ), which is intended to make it easier for road users to pay for special toll routes . With the digital route toll , the driver no longer has to stop at the toll station , but instead drives through a specially marked, video-controlled lane. The vehicle registration number is compared and the passage is activated automatically.

The system was introduced in 1991 and was originally intended for holders of annual passes. The digital section toll can now also be used for individual journeys. These are available online in the ASFINAG web shop, via a mobile app or at many rest stops and petrol stations in Austria.

Since 2020, ASFINAG has been offering the option of driving through the six toll stations even more easily with the “FLEX digital route toll” service. No more stopping, no more buying the respective route toll tickets for the various sections - with FLEX, automatic billing takes place after each journey. To do this, the license plate must be stored in the ASFINAG toll shop and a payment method must be selected.

No real card is issued when purchasing this digital route toll card. Only the license plate number entered by the buyer is recorded and then compared at the toll station with that of the vehicle entering. If a car driver accidentally gets into this lane or the license plate is not recognized (e.g. due to dirt), he has the option of leaving it by exiting before the toll station and queuing for the normal checkout lane.

The price for a digital route toll card is exactly the same as the price for manual tolling. The digital route toll card can be purchased for the following special toll routes:

The digital route toll system can be used by both domestic and foreign cars. The separate digital toll lane can only be used by cars without a trailer with a vehicle width of less than 2 m.
