The Vienna north edge expressway S2 runs through the 22nd district of Vienna Donaustadt and is the direct extension of the autobahn Südosttangente Vienna A23 north to the Vienna outer ring expressway S1 near Süßenbrunn . With a length of only 7.4 kilometers, it is by far the shortest expressway in Austria.
In terms of road traffic law, the S2 has the same rank as a motorway and requires a vignette or toll . The operation and maintenance is carried out by the state highway operator ASFINAG or on the new line “Süßenbrunn bypass” by Bonaventura Straßenerhaltungs-GmbH .
history
From early traffic plans it can be seen that the current S2 road was previously planned as the “north-east bypass” A24. This should run from the Kaisermühlen junction as an elevated road to Aderklaa and there join the Vienna outer ring motorway A21. The A21 was planned as a bypass from Vienna to the Danube bank A22 motorway at the Korneuburg junction and is now replaced by the Vienna outer ring expressway S1.
Later the S2 was planned as a semicircular expressway from Hirschstetten via Stammersdorf to the Strebersdorf junction (A22).
On June 29, 1993, the south-east bypass was extended from the Kaisermühlen node to Hirschstetten . At the same time, Wiener Nordrand Straße B302 from Hirschstetten to Wagramer Straße B8 was opened as a four-lane car road with level crossings. At that time, the road ran through an almost undeveloped area, so that level crossings using junctions were dispensed with. In the following years, the Kagran and Stadlau industrial parks were built directly on the B302, each of which was given a junction with the autostraße and caused an increase in traffic. In 2002 the B302 was renamed S2 and added to the network of motorways and expressways . Due to the existing traffic light crossings with Breitenleer Straße , Rautenweg and Hermann-Gebauer-Straße , no vignette was introduced.
The S2 developed into the main entry route from Marchfeld to Vienna. Due to the massive increase in traffic, there were constant traffic jams and long waiting times in front of the intersections of the S2 with the Breitenleer Straße and the Rautenweg, even in times of low traffic . Due to the extension of the S2 in the direction of the planned north autobahn and the consequent further increase in traffic volume, the removal of the intersections became inevitable.
expansion
Level clearance
The original traffic lights of the S2 with the Breitenleer road and the Rautenweg were between 2007 and 2009 level freely expanded, so that the S2 right now leads both roads. The Rautenweg is now connected to the expressway as a full connection point and the Breitenleer Straße as a half connection point to the south. In order to also connect the Kagran industrial park in between and Breitenleer Straße to the north, collector lanes were built between Breitenleer Straße and Rautenweg parallel to S2, which, however, are not part of the expressway, but represent municipal roads. The road clearance for the level clearance of the S2 took place on December 18, 2009. At the same time, the S2 from Hirschstetten to the Süßenbrunn bypass introduced a vignette or toll, increased the maximum speed from 70 to 80 km / h and the distance from a car road to the autobahn in terms of the road traffic regulations. Adaptation work was carried out on the collector lanes until the end of April 2010.
Süßenbrunn bypass
The extension of the S2 to the S1, the Süßenbrunn bypass , is part of Package 1 of the PPP Eastern Region and was also built between 2007 and 2009. South of the former intersection with Hermann-Gebauer-Straße, which is now a junction, the S2 swings from the old route to the east, bypasses the Süßenbrunn district and then swings back to the north, where it meets the junction on Angerner Straße between Süßenbrunn and reached Aderklaa . To the north of it, on the Vienna / Lower Austria border , the street name changes to the Wiener Outer Ring Schnellstraße S1. The Süßenbrunn bypass was opened to traffic on October 31, 2009. At the same time, a driving ban for trucks over 3.5 tons came into force on Angerner Straße B8 in the local area of Süßenbrunn . The old street from Hermann-Gebauer-Straße to Wagramer Straße will be abandoned as a dual carriageway and an autostraße and will be integrated into the Viennese municipal road network with the designation “Hauptstraße B8a”.
With the opening of the planned Süßenbrunn junction, where the S1 from Groß-Enzersdorf is to connect from 2018 , the S2 will be shortened and the northern section up to the state border will be taken over by the S1.
