The municipality Balatonmáriafürdő [ ˈbɒlɒtonmaːriɒfyrdøː ] (German meaning: Marienbad) is located in the Marcali district in Somogy County on the south-west bank of Lake Balaton , directly at the National Park of the Little Balaton , which is one of the largest natural swamp areas and bird paradises in Central Europe. Keszthely is approx. 18 km west, Fonyód approx. 17 km east of Balatonmáriafürdő. The number of permanent residents is only around 650.

The settlement was significantly promoted by Count Imre Széchenyi, who promoted viticulture in this area and led the work on the parceling of the land. Balatonmáriafürdő was not named after St. Maria , but after Imre Széchenyi's wife, Mária. The place became an independent municipality in 1926. Under the communists it was incorporated into the neighboring town of Balatonkeresztúr , with which it is completely grown. Only after the end of the communist regime in Hungary did the town become independent again. The two mayors still have their official residence in the same building. In some places the municipal boundary runs in the middle of the street. The Catholic parish church (for the Exaltation of the Cross ), the police and the fire brigade are located in Keresztúr.

The eight kilometer long lakeshore is very flat. The reed belt on this part of the lake is almost completely preserved and about 50 m wide. Due to the panorama of the north bank and the partly untouched nature of the reed belt in this area of the lake, Balatonmáriafürdő is one of the quietest and most romantic places on Lake Balaton. Here the lake is also the widest at around 11 km.

There are some small vineyards in the hinterland of the village . The main source of income is tourism. In the center of the village there are shops as well as some hotels and the public bathing beach (entrance fee). There are small bays for bathing along the entire bank (free, but partly with good infrastructure) that have been cut into the reeds and are mainly used by tourists who are accommodated in holiday accommodation. Over 95% of the houses are weekend and holiday homes.

The port was built in a drainage canal that leads here from Marcali . On a stone pier that protrudes approx. 300 m into the lake and protects the fairway from silting up, there is also a walking path that is mainly used by anglers. In addition to the landing stage for commercial shipping , where mainly excursion ships from the Mahart shipping company dock, the port also houses a sailing club with 80 ships. This port is the only shelter for keel boats (water depth approx. 1.8 m) on the southwestern bank of Lake Balaton.

The MÁV railway line runs through the town on a single track. In addition to the train station near the center, there are also stops in the direction of Budapest: Máriaszölötelep 3 km east and Balatonmáriafürdő - 5 km east.

The place can be reached via the national road 7 through Balatonkeresztúr. It is located between the M7 motorway exits in the neighboring towns of Balatonfenyves (km 160) and Balatonújlak (km 170). The Balaton-Uferstraße leads to the neighboring towns of Balatonfenyves in the east and Balatonbereny in the west.

Balatonmariafürdő connects Keresztür and Fenyves as part of the Balaton cycle path ; the partial stage runs through the middle of the residential areas.
