The term tile cutter describes a tool , which in the region of tilers craft for separating of ceramic tile is used. A tile cutter is required if ceramic tiles are to be given a specific fitting size. A basic distinction must be made between hand-held and electrically operated tile cutters. The choice of tool depends on the properties of the ceramic tile.

Hand-held tile cutter

Hand-held tile cutters essentially consist of a hard metal wheel , which is guided over the surface of the ceramic tile with pressure. The hard metal wheel is pulled along a guide rail in order to achieve a straight cut. In this way, a fine cut is created on the surface, which acts as a predetermined breaking point . Then one of the two halves is loaded and the ceramic tile breaks along the cutting line. The functionality is similar to that of a glass cutter .

Electric tile cutter

Electrically operated tile cutters have a diamond cutting disc with which the ceramic tile is completely cut. For this purpose, similar to a circular saw, the ceramic tile is placed on a support table and then cut. In order to reduce the development of dust and to prevent the cutting wheel from annealing, the cutting wheel is wetted with water (so-called wet cutting).
