Tiler
The tiler is a craft occupation . In Austria the job title is paving and tiling , in Germany tiling, paving and mosaic laying and in Switzerland paving . The professional skills and knowledge in the respective countries are unlikely to differ from country to country, apart from special traditional manual laying methods. However, there are different training and further education offers depending on the country.
Today the profession of tile, slab and mosaic layer is an expansion profession in the field of construction. The profession requires both technical knowledge and technical skills, as well as aesthetic sensitivity and the influence on the creative effect of his work on a building.

Training courses
Vocational training is implemented through the dual vocational training system . In addition to the training in the company, the inter-company training is carried out in the training centers of the Chamber of Crafts, in which basic practical skills are taught.
The profession is usually learned in Germany in a three-year apprenticeship as a journeyman. If the journeyman examination is not passed, they can, under certain conditions, obtain a skilled worker qualification as a construction worker, and construction workers can take an examination to become a tiler, panel and mosaic worker after another year of training. After at least three years in the craft , the craftsman is admitted to the master craftsman examination .

In the training of the paver and tiler according to the professional profile in Austria, the essential contents are:

Training courses
In Austria, paving and tiling is a three-year apprenticeship . As in Germany, Austrian apprentices receive dual training in relevant industry companies and at vocational schools.
So-called related apprenticeships, such as potter and ceramist , can be completed with a shorter apprenticeship period. Apprentices complete their vocational training with the final apprenticeship examination and can train to become a master . Not only journeymen of the tile and tile layers, but also those of the stove and ceramic and furnace construction are allowed.
The successful final apprenticeship examination also enables access to the vocational matura (vocational matriculation examination) and subsequently to further higher qualifications, e.g. B. at universities of applied sciences.
Education (Switzerland)
Tiler
In Switzerland, the training is to Plattenleger / Plattenlegerin place in a three-year dual training. Advanced training
Participation in an additional training course to become a “natural stone layer” lasting 35 hours is offered, provided that you have, for example, a degree as a paver, four years of practical experience or other equivalent qualifications.
The Swiss Board Association offers additional modular training to become a “paver manager”, as well as a specialization as a customer advisor.
Master paver
A further training course to become a master paver with a final exam takes place with 630 lessons in the Swiss training center in Dagmersellen .
Typical tools used by the tiler
In some areas, the tools of the tilers are identical to those of the stonemasons who carry out laying work on construction sites, on floors and on walls (e.g. angle grinder with diamond cutting disc and hand tools for laying and grouting). Working on ceramics requires tools that are job-specific.
