job profile

The profession of tile, slab and mosaic layer belongs to the group of construction and finishing trades, the trades listed in Appendix B of the Crafts Code that can be operated as a craft. The craft regulations part II regulates:

  • the training period (2-3 years)
  • the job description with its skills and knowledge
  • the training framework curriculum
  • the exam requirements

The job description specifies the activities and the knowledge and skills required for this. A distinction must be made between the examination requirements for the apprenticeship and the master craftsman examination.

Training courses

Vocational training is implemented through the dual vocational training system . In addition to the training in the company, the inter-company training is carried out in the training centers of the Chamber of Crafts, in which basic practical skills are taught.

The profession is usually learned in Germany in a three-year apprenticeship as a journeyman. If the journeyman examination is not passed, they can, under certain conditions, obtain a skilled worker qualification as a construction worker, and construction workers can take an examination to become a tiler, panel and mosaic worker after another year of training. After at least three years in the craft , the craftsman is admitted to the master craftsman examination .

The master's title for the profession of tiler was reintroduced in 2019. Thus, in order to found a company in the tile, panel and fashion laying trade, it is necessary to attend the master school.

In particular, like all skilled workers in the finishing trade, a tiler has:

  • Knowledge of the handling of tools and machines
  • Basic knowledge of work planning
  • Knowledge of fabrics for expansion
  • Processing of fabrics including surface treatment

  • Theoretical knowledge of the attachment, installation and anchoring techniques for panels
  • Knowledge of the execution of chemically resistant coverings
  • design skills and the basics of color theory dominate

Practical skills

  • Reading and preparation of draft sketches , work drawings, installation plans and detailed drawings

So-called related apprenticeships, such as potter and ceramist , can be completed with a shorter apprenticeship period. Apprentices complete their vocational training with the final apprenticeship examination and can train to become a master . Not only journeymen of the tile and tile layers, but also those of the stove and ceramic and furnace construction are allowed.

The successful final apprenticeship examination also enables access to the vocational matura (vocational matriculation examination) and subsequently to further higher qualifications, e.g. B. at universities of applied sciences.

Education (Switzerland)

Tiler

In Switzerland, the training is to Plattenleger / Plattenlegerin place in a three-year dual training. The practical training in the company is supplemented by inter-company training in the Swiss training center of the Swiss Record Association in Dagmersellen , lasting a total of four weeks in the 1st year of training, two weeks in the 2nd year of training, three weeks and in the 3rd year of training. In the final certificate, the profession is shown as a "trained paver" or "trained paver". There is also the option of “shortened additional apprenticeships” to become a stove fitter or bricklayer.

Vocational school lessons take place one day every week in the subjects of vocational studies (building materials, building materials and tools, machines, equipment and construction techniques, etc.), technical drawing, technical calculation and design. Furthermore, if you perform particularly well during or after your training, you can attend vocational secondary school.

Record practitioner

In addition, there is a two-year training course as a record practitioner with vocational school lessons and inter-company training. In contrast to the paver, they only do simple and right-angled work.

Advanced training

Participation in an additional training course to become a “natural stone layer” lasting 35 hours is offered, provided that you have, for example, a degree as a paver, four years of practical experience or other equivalent qualifications.

The Swiss Board Association offers additional modular training to become a “paver manager”, as well as a specialization as a customer advisor.

Master paver

A further training course to become a master paver with a final exam takes place with 630 lessons in the Swiss training center in Dagmersellen .

Typical tools used by the tiler

Electrically operated tile cutter

In some areas, the tools of the tilers are identical to those of the stonemasons who carry out laying work on construction sites, on floors and on walls (e.g. angle grinder with diamond cutting disc and hand tools for laying and grouting). Working on ceramics requires tools that are job-specific.

Some typical examples are:

Parrot tongs
  • Circle cutter
  • Carbide-tipped tile hammer
  • Carbide-tipped tile chisel
  • Tile cutter , the anritzt with a carbide wheel surface,
  • Parrot tongs for breaking holes
  • Wet and dry cut-off saw with diamond cutting disc
  • Tile trowel
  • Washing set
  • Grout board
