Wilhelm Kaan (born August 23, 1865 in Weinhaus near Vienna, † April 29, 1945 in Graz- Ragnitz; until 1919 Edler Ritter von Kaan ) was an Austrian lawyer and politician. From November 6, 1918 to May 27, 1919 he was the first governor of Styria in the First Republic. As such, he was also chairman of the provisional state assembly .

biography

Kaan came from a Jewish family (Kohen) who had converted around 1800. He was the son of an imperial and royal colonel who was raised to the nobility in 1872 as a noble knight of Kaan . He completed a law degree at the Karl-Franzens University and had been a member of the Arminia Graz fraternity since 1884 . After receiving his doctorate in 1890, Kaan practiced the legal profession in Graz and in 1897 founded a law firm that still exists today (today Kaan Cronenberg & Partner ). As a lawyer, he was recognized throughout Austria as an authority in the field of water law , which was of particular economic and political importance in times of intensive expansion of the use of water power .

Kaan was a member of the German Freedom Party , from 1905 a councilor in Graz and from 1908 a member of the Styrian state parliament. In the first state elections in Styria on May 11, 1919, the Christian Social Party won the most seats and Kaan was replaced as governor on May 27 by Anton Rintelen .

He is buried in the St. Leonhard Cemetery in Graz .

His nephew Richard Kaan was President of the Styrian State Parliament for the ÖVP between 1965 and 1969 .
