Benedict of Arx

Benedikt von Arx (born May 29, 1817 in Olten ; † May 18, 1875 there ) was a Swiss politician , notary and judge . From 1857 until his death he was a member of the National Council.

biography

After his school days in Olten, the son of a shoemaker received training as a secretary for official clerks and as a court clerk. From 1844 to 1856 von Arx ran his own notary's office in Olten, after which he was the clerk of the Olten-Gösgen office until 1871 and finally president of the Olten-Gösgen court until 1875. He was also the owner of a dynamite and stone business and, from 1854, an editor for the Oltner Wochenblatt .

Within the free-thinking movement in the canton of Solothurn , von Arx belonged to the radical liberal “red” wing around Wilhelm Vigier , which prevailed against the old liberal “gray” wing. He ran successfully in the National Council elections in 1857 ; He was re-elected five times in a row. In the National Council he mainly dealt with the development of trade and agriculture. In 1862 von Arx was a co-founder and then chairman of the board of directors of the Olten consumer association, and from 1871 he was also a member of the Solothurn cantonal council . The Grütliverein Olten made him an honorary member.
