history
Since 1197, a wooden chapel , subordinated to the Seckau monastery, can be found at the site of today's parish church. This was replaced by a Romanesque church building. The current church dates from 1700 and was a branch church of the St. Radegund parish church until 1777 . Until the 1950s it was under the patronage of the Lords of Kainberg Castle . In 1952 the interior was renovated.
description
The floor plan of the church is 27.5 meters long and 12.8 meters wide. The west side of the church has a simple gable front with ox eyes , divided by pilaster strips . In the outer wall there are niches with fresco portraits of the four evangelists . A side chapel was added to the southern part of the nave . The square tower with an onion helmet is attached to the southern part of the choir and has a bell that was cast in 1740. It has a side length of 4.9 meters and is around 52 meters high. Next to the entrance to the tower is a statue of St. John Nepomuk made by JB Straub from the third quarter of the 18th century. A Roman stone from the 2nd century was built into the southern wall of the tower. There is also a scourge Christ from the 18th century and a statue of the Virgin Mary that was created later.
The interior of the church is designed in baroque style. The nave has three bays and is spanned by a groin vault sitting on pillars . To the south of the third yoke there is an attached, younger chapel. The two-bay choir, somewhat retracted in the south, has a semicircular altar niche and an oratory parapet from 1753. In the south, the church tower and the sacristy adjoin the choir . The core of these and the southern wall of the nave probably date from the Middle Ages. The pulpit was built in 1753 and is attributed to Matthias Leitner. The three-axis gallery with the organ rests on two columns and was extended by additional galleries in the late 18th century.
The altar sheet of the high altar, painted by H. Schwach, dates from 1870 and depicts St. Stephen . The upper image and the tabernacle date from the second half of the 18th century. The two side altars are decorated with rocailles . The left altar has an altar panel made in 1754 showing the holy family . The altar panel shows St. John Nepomuk and was painted by Anton Jandl in 1781. In the side chapel there is a portrait of the stoning of St. Stephen, painted before 1714. This is provided with the coat of arms of the Dietrichsteiner . There is also a picture from the 18th century with the Lamentation of Christ in the church. The organ dates from 1782 and was rebuilt by Carl Bilich in 1886/87. The organ was restored in 1952.
