Kaspar von Logau (born August 3, 1524 in Neisse ; † June 4, 1574 in Breslau ) was Bishop of Wiener Neustadt and Prince-Bishop of Breslau and Governor of Silesia .

Life

Kaspar came from the Silesian noble family von Logau . His parents were Matthäus von Logau auf Schlaupitz and Bechau , episcopal chancellor, and Susanne, daughter of the diocese governor Iwan Ogigel. Kaspar attended the parish school in Neisse and was then educated at the royal court in Innsbruck together with the princes Maximilian and Ferdinand . Since 1541 he had an altar clergyman in the parish church in Neisse. In 1542 he was awarded a canonical in Breslau and later in Olomouc . After studying in Italy, he taught Archduke Karl , son of Ferdinand I. In 1551 he became Provost of Leitmeritz .

Bishop of Wiener Neustadt

After the death of Bishop Martin Durlacher von Wiener Neustadt, Kaspar von Logau was elected as his successor in 1560 with the support of Emperor Ferdinand I.

Bishop of Wroclaw

In 1562 the cathedral chapter elected Kaspar von Logau to succeed the late Breslau bishop Balthasar von Promnitz . In this position he led diocesan synods in 1563 and 1565 , but these had little impact on the religious life of his diocese. The seminary , which opened in 1565, could not develop due to a lack of financial support. A German translation of the Roman catechism published by him was printed in Neisse in 1570.

Kaspar von Logau died on June 4, 1574 in Breslau and was buried in the Peter and Paul Chapel of the Neisse parish church. His tomb is considered a masterpiece of the High Renaissance .
