Keratohyalin is a chemically not precisely defined protein that occurs in keratohyalin granules in epithelial cells of the skin .
properties
Keratohyalin is accumulated in the keratinization in the grain ( Stratum granulosum ) and prickly cell ( Stratum spinosum ) of epithelia in the form of small grains ( granules ) within the cells . Keratohyalin does not contain any sulfhydryl groups or disulfide bridges . In the course of further cornification, it is converted into eleidin and finally into keratin . The keratin is transported into the stratum lucidum , which is why this layer appears as a very thin line. It serves to protect against water loss.
