The Diocese of Wiener Neustadt ( Latin : Dioecesis Neostadiensis ) was a Catholic diocese based in Wiener Neustadt and was most recently part of the Church Province of Vienna .

history

It has its origins in Emperor Frederick III's move to Rome . , who in 1468/69 established a diocese in his residence city Wiener Neustadt, which was separated from the Archdiocese of Salzburg in 1469 by Pope Paul II and was only restricted to the city of Wiener Neustadt. At the same time, the Pope left the right of nomination to the bishop to the emperor and his successors as dukes of Styria . The parish church of Liebfrauen became the cathedral of the diocese. It soon became apparent that the diocese had insufficient funding, and the emperor tried to unite it with the Order of St. George . It was only able to break away from this in 1534.

Seized by the Reformation, the diocese, which was to be re-Catholicized, has been occupied mainly with the court preachers as bishops since 1548. After the diocese of Vienna was elevated to the status of an archbishopric, the former diocese was incorporated into the Vienna Metropolitan Association. Here it was assigned another parish.

Empress Maria Theresia created the office of military bishop in 1773 . This should always be transferred to the bishop of Wiener Neustadt, as his residence was close to Vienna and he was not very busy with his small diocese.

In 1785 the diocese was enlarged again as part of Josephinism and was supposed to move its seat to Sankt Pölten . In fact, it never came to that, since it was abolished in 1785 and its diocesan territory was given to the Archdiocese of Vienna.

In 1773 the bishop of Wiener Neustadt was given the spiritual jurisdiction over the imperial army in times of war and peace. Following on from this tradition, Military Bishop Kostelecky and Military Bishop Werner were owners of the titular bishopric . The Episcopal Church is St. George's Cathedral in Wiener Neustädter Burg ( Theresian Military Academy ), the titular church of the titular bishopric is still the Wiener Neustadt Cathedral.
