Life

Count Hallweil (Hallwyl, Hallwil) came from the Austrian branch of the noble Hallwyl family , which died out with the death of Lieutenant Field Marshal Franz Anton von Hallweil (1702–1779).

From 1721 to 1728 he studied theology at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome and after his ordination in 1729 took over the parish of Probstdorf . On March 4, 1741, Maria Theresa presented him to Pope Benedict XIV as the new bishop of Wiener Neustadt. The papal confirmation took place on May 29, 1741, the consecration was carried out by the Archbishop of Vienna, Count Sigismund Kollonitsch, on June 18, 1741 (with the assistance of the Auxiliary Bishops Ernst Gottlieb von Attems and Giovanni Paolo Maricone ). On July 2nd, the solemn appointment of the new bishop took place in the Wiener Neustädter Bischofshof.

Although Wiener Neustadt was not a rich diocese - in 1749 Count Hallweil received the parish of Raabs an der Thaya to increase his income - Bishop Hallweil lavishly redesigned the cathedral and his residence. Got into great financial distress as a result, he was u. a. forced to pledge the episcopal library to Abbot Joseph Stübicher of the Neukloster Abbey in 1769 , because he had granted him a loan of around 8,000 guilders. However, Hallweil retained the usufruct of his books for life, which passed into the possession of the Neukloster after his death. With the new monastery and the Theresian Military Academy established in 1752 , he also had various conflicts over jurisdiction rights. a. because of the occupation of St. George's Church in the castle in Wiener Neustadt, which was elevated to a parish church in 1771 .

He was buried in the presbytery of the cathedral. Although he was in office longer than any of his predecessors (and also his successors), there is no epitaph there to remind of him.
