Ernst Gottlieb (Amadeus) Thomas, Reichsgraf von Attems , Freiherr von Heiligenkreuz, was the fifth of the seven children from the first marriage of Count Ignaz Maria von Attems (1652–1732) with Countess Maria Regina von Wurmbrand-Stuppach (1659–1715) . On June 4, 1708 he received a canonical in Passau, then studied at the Jesuit colleges in Graz and Vienna and later at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome, where he received his doctorate in theology and philosophy in 1715, followed by a further doctorate in both Rights to La Sapienza University . He was ordained a priest on December 17, 1724. In 1730 he received a second canonical in Salzburg, where he was sworn in on December 25th.

In 1733 he was appointed vicar general under the river Enns and official of the Passau consistory in Vienna (with seat at Maria Stiegen ) and on December 2, 1735, he was appointed Passau suffragan bishop. On January 15, 1736, the Prince Archbishop of Vienna Sigismund von Kollonitz consecrated him as Bishop of Drachon (Tracona). On October 6, 1742, Empress Maria Theresa appointed him Prince-Bishop of Laibach , and the papal appointment followed on December 17, with permission to retain the two canons' posts.

Soon after his enthronement on March 27, 1743, Bishop Attems began visiting his diocese, also visiting difficult-to-access parishes in which no bishop had set foot in years. On the other hand, he left later visitations to his vicars general and himself held regular diocesan synods in Laibach or Oberburg (Gornji Grad). Although he himself spoke only poorly Slovenian, he made sure that sermons and religious teaching were given in the national language. He had the episcopal summer residence in Görtschach / Goričane expanded and consecrated the baroque Trinity Church in Ljubljana in 1742. He had another bishop's residence built in Oberburg and, in 1752, instead of the old parish church, with the support of the Carniolan estates, the monumental cathedral.

Bishop Count Attems died unexpectedly on December 5, 1757 in Vienna and was buried in the Magdalenenkirche in Oberburg. After his death, the government in Vienna planned to unite the dioceses of Ljubljana and Gorizia / Gorizia (the latter was created in 1751 after the dissolution of the Patriarchate of Aquileia ) and to transfer the title of imperial prince from Laibach to Görtz, but failed due to resistance from Rome and the Archbishop of Gorizia Karl Michael Count of Attems .
