Thomas Johann Nepomuk Kaspar Graf von Thun and Hohenstein (born May 16, 1737 in Trient , † October 7, 1796 in Passau ) was the 72nd bishop in the Diocese of Passau .

biography

The son of a prince-bishop court marshal and imperial secret councilor and chamberlain from the noble family Thun and Hohenstein became canon in Passau after completing his studies in 1756 . In 1766 he was appointed president of the court council and in 1771 as dean of the cathedral . It was not until that year that he was ordained a priest .

In 1776 he was named titular bishop of Thyatira , with which he acted as auxiliary bishop under Prince-Bishop Leopold Ernst von Firmian in Passau . Firmian also donated him the episcopal ordination on January 19, 1777 . He was the most important employee of the prince-bishop in the administration of the extensive diocese and ultimately also led the political business.

After Firmian's death he was defeated by Joseph Franz Anton von Auersperg in the bishopric election in 1783 and has since been leader of the conservative camp in the cathedral chapter. After Auersperg's death he was elected the new bishop of Passau by the cathedral chapter on November 4, 1795. During his short reign he promoted the expansion of the Hacklberg brewery and the Holztrift on the Ilz as well as the Passau porcelain factory. After only 11 months and 4 days in reign, he died as a result of falling from his horse while riding in Hacklberg .
