Joseph Franz von Weckert (born September 12, 1822 in Wallerstein , † March 13, 1889 in Passau ) was the 76th Bishop of Passau .

Life

He was the son of the brewery manager Franz Alban Weckert and his wife Maria Bosch. He graduated from high school in Dillingen an der Donau in 1839. He then studied philosophy at the Lyceum there and, from 1841 in Munich, first law, then theology. In 1843 he entered the Dillinger clerical seminary.

Weckert was ordained a priest on April 2, 1845. He then worked as a chaplain in Kleinerdingen near Nördlingen and in Augsburg / St. Ulrich . In 1848 he became cathedral vicar and secretary to Bishop Richarz. He also exercised these offices under his successors. King Ludwig II nominated him to Bishop of Passau on October 4, 1875, the papal appointment followed on January 28, 1876. On April 30, 1876 he was ordained bishop in Passau by Archbishop Gregor von Scherr . With the award of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown , he was raised to the Bavarian personal knighthood .

The ecclesiastical authority exercised by his predecessor Heinrich von Hofstätter and the rigor in the upbringing of the next generation of priests were considerably softened by him. Due to illness, Weckert had little contact with the citizens or with his own clergy, because he could not do a single visit and only a few confirmations . He died on March 13, 1889 and is buried in the cathedral before the Pauli conversion age. A simple memorial on the wall next to the altar commemorates him. The Bischof-Weckert-Straße in Wallerstein is also named after him.
