Michael Rampf , Knight of Rampf since 1895 (born October 4, 1825 in Munich , † March 29, 1901 in Passau ) was Bishop of Passau from 1889 to 1901.

Life

Michael Rampf was the son of Sergeant Michael Rampf and his wife Magdalena, nee Guttenberger. He attended the (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich , where he graduated from high school in 1843. He then studied philosophy and theology in Munich.

He completed the pastoral year in the clerical seminary in Freising and was ordained priest on June 17, 1848 for the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising . Rampf was initially a curator at the Herzogspitalkirche in Munich and, since 1851, a tutor at the clerical seminar in Freising. In 1853 he received his doctorate with an exegetical thesis for Dr. theol. In 1855 Archbishop Karl August Graf von Reisach appointed the 29-year-old director of the Freising Clerical Seminary. At the same time he became a professor of pastoral theology . In 1865 King Ludwig II appointed him to the Munich Metropolitan Chapter at the suggestion of Archbishop Gregor von Scherr . In 1874 he was appointed vicar general .

Rampf, as vicar general closest collaborator of the Munich archbishops Gregor von Scherr and his successor Antonius von Steichele , was appointed provost of the cathedral in 1882 . Since he was considered critical of the state, the Bavarian government hesitated to let him become a bishop. On December 8, 1889, Prince Regent Luitpold finally announced the nomination for Bishop of Passau. The papal appointment followed on December 30, 1889. On May 11, 1890 he was ordained bishop in Passau by his predecessor Antonius von Thoma , who was now Archbishop of Munich and Freising . With award of Commander of Merit of the Bavarian Crown , he was in the 1895 personal nobility raised .

As a bishop, Rampf primarily promoted the training of the clergy. In 1890 he opened a second boys' convent in Burghausen for the southern part of the diocese. In the same year he arranged regular pastoral conferences for the pastoral clergy. In 1896 he introduced Eternal Prayer in all the churches of the diocese. In his eleven-year term he was able to found 43 new parishes and ten new branches . The Passau Cathedral was given its present form during his tenure by adding the two tower domes.
