Anton Steichele , since 1878 Knight of Steichele (born January 22, 1816 in Mertingen , † October 9, 1889 in Freising ) was a German Roman Catholic priest and church historian and from 1878 to 1889 Archbishop of Munich and Freising . His name is best known today for the monumental work on church and local history he wrote, The Diocese of Augsburg .

life and work

The oldest of 10 children of the red tanner Anton Steichele attended the Latin school in Dillingen from 1826 to 1833 . From 1833–1835 he studied philosophy at the local lyceum, and from 1835 Catholic theology at the University of Munich . His teachers there included Johann Adam Möhler and Ignaz von Döllinger . During this time he earned his living as a tutor. Steichele was ordained a priest on August 28, 1838 . Further studies at the University of Munich followed, which should prepare him for a philological teaching position. At the same time he was court master (private tutor) of the family of the later State Councilor Franz von Berks and moved with them to Landshut in 1839 . There he got to know the Augsburg Bishop Peter von Richarz better as a friend of the family. In 1841 he became cathedral vicar and episcopal archivist in Augsburg , where he also worked as a catechist at the St. Anna college there. On April 27, 1844, he was appointed to Richarz's secretary to the bishop and to the clergy , and on December 30, 1847, he was elected canon to the Augsburg cathedral chapter , of which he became provost (chairman) on August 9, 1873.

Steichele lived very withdrawn and devoted himself almost entirely to historical studies. He published several works on church history, including a ten-volume description of the Augsburg diocese, of which he was able to complete about a third. After his death, the work was continued by others, but ultimately remained unfinished because the planned first volume on the general history of the diocese and the city of Augsburg itself never appeared. On July 4, 1870, Steichele was awarded the doctorate of the Munich theological faculty for his services to church history.

On April 30, 1878, Steichele was nominated Archbishop of Munich and Freising by King Ludwig II, and on July 15, 1878 by Pope Leo XIII. preconized and ordained bishop on October 13, 1878. He was ordained bishop by the bishop of Augsburg, Pankratius von Dinkel . With the award of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown , Steichele was also elevated to a personal knighthood . In 1887 he received the Grand Commander of this order.

As archbishop he was responsible for the establishment of several parishes for the rapidly growing population of Munich. In his office as Archbishop Steichele was Reichsrat der Krone Bayern , i.e. a member of the upper house of the Bavarian state parliament, which met in secret. Politically, he advocated compliance with the Bavarian Concordat of 1817 and greater ecclesiastical influence on education. During the years of the Kulturkampf it was considered a balancing force. His efforts to win back his excommunicated teacher, Döllinger, who had turned to Old Catholicism, remained in vain for the Roman Catholic Church.

Steichele died after a long illness in Freising in 1889 and was buried in the Frauenkirche in Munich .
