Sigismund Christoph von Herberstein (born February 13, 1644 in Graz , † July 20, 1716 in Perugia ) was Bishop of Laibach .

Origin and career

His parents were Ernst Friedrich von Herberstein , Chancellor of Lower Austria , Chamberlain and Hereditary Treasurer of Carinthia, and Anna Regina Freiin von Falbenhaupt. After attending the Jesuit College in Graz, he studied law at the theological universities in Passau and Regensburg. As a student at the College Germanicum he studied theology in Rome 1661-1665 and acquired in 1668 at the Sapienza the academic degree of Dr. theol. et phil. He was ordained a priest on July 31, 1667 for the diocese of Ljubljana , where he was appointed provost of the cathedral that same year . He had been the cathedral capitular in Regensburg since 1664 . In 1668 he became cathedral provost in Passau and Breslau and in 1671 cathedral provost in Augsburg .

Bishop of Laibach

After the death of the Ljubljana Bishop Josef Discounta , Sigismund Christoph von Herberstein was appointed his successor on April 21, 1683. The papal confirmation of December 6, 1683 was followed on May 1, 1684 by the episcopal ordination by the Bishop of Senj , Hyacinthus Dimitri . In 1701 he resigned from his offices and spent the last years of his life in the oratory of St. Philipp Neri in Perugia, where he died in 1716.
