Rinaldo Scarlicchio

Rinaldo Scarlicchio (also Rinaldo Scarliccio or Reinaldo Scarlichio ) (* 16th century in Graz , † 1640 in Laibach ) was bishop of Trieste from 1622 to 1630 and bishop of Laibach from 1630 to 1640 .

Life

Rinaldo Scarlicchio was born in Graz . His family originally came from Montefiascone in Lazio . He joined the Franciscan order and was in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV. appointed Bishop of Trieste . The episcopal ordination donated to him on August 14, 1622 Tomaž Hren , the bishop of Laibach, co-consecrators were Girolamo Rusca , bishop of Capo d'Istria and Etienne Weinberger , auxiliary bishop in Breslau .

According to legend, in 1624 Scarlicchio discovered the relics of Saint Justus , the patron saint of Trieste Cathedral , which had been lost since the beginning of the 14th century. Scarlicchio laid the foundation stone of the Jesuit church Santa Maria Maggiore in Trieste on October 10, 1627 .

In 1630 Scarlicchio was transferred to the bishopric of Ljubljana . In the same year he became governor of Inner Austria in Graz after Bishop von Lavant Leonhard (II.) Von Götz and held this office until May 1638.

Appreciation

Scarlicchio is, alongside Andrea Rapicio and Enea Silvio Piccolomini , later Pope Pius II, one of the three bishops in whose honor three bronze busts by the hand of the Hungarian sculptor Bela Brestyanszky were placed on the facade of the Trieste Cathedral in 1862 .

A street in Trieste is named after him.
