Anton Alois Wolf

Anton Alois Wolf ( Slovenian Anton Alojzij Wolf ; born June 14, 1782 in Idria ( Idrija ) in the Duchy of Carniola , part of Austria-Hungary , today Slovenia ; † February 7, 1859 in Laibach (today Ljubljana )) was a Slovenian bishop of the Roman Empire catholic church . He was also known for his political work in numerous offices and for promoting the Slovene language .
Life
Anton Alois Wolf, son of an inspector at the mining authority, attended grammar school in Idria and then the Liceum in Laibach, where he studied theology and philosophy until 1803 and taught philosophy since 1810. In 1804 he was ordained a priest and then worked as a preacher at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Laibach. In 1824 he was appointed Bishop of Laibach. Two years later he was given the title of prince. In 1826 he became an assessor of the Provincial Tax Regulatory Commission, and in 1835 he was elected to the state parliament's committee.
Wolf sponsored the construction and repair of church buildings, the expansion of the library, the increase in the number of priests and the poor. He also turned against the nationalist excesses of Slovenian preachers. In 1849 he was made an honorary citizen of Laibach. In 1844 he received the dignity of a secret council.
Wolf also made a contribution by sponsoring the German-Slovenian lexicon by Matej Cigale and financing the printing (1855) with 80,000 lire, as well as supporting an improved translation of the New Testament into Slovenian.
He was buried in the Ljubljana Cathedral of St. Nicholas.
