history
The first church on this site was a Romanesque building and was first mentioned in 1262. After a fire in 1361, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style. In 1461 the Ljubljana diocese was founded, making the church a cathedral . The investigators suspected that it was arson by the Ottomans .
Between 1701 and 1706 the church was rebuilt in its current baroque form according to plans by the architect Andrea Pozzo and under the direction of Francesco Bombasi . On May 8, 1707 the consecration of the church took place.
In 1996, on the occasion of the visit of Pope John Paul II , two massive bronze doors with relief depictions of Slovenian history and the bishops of Ljubljana were installed.
