Parodia comarapana is a species of plant in the genus Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet comarapana means (Latin comarapanus) 'from the Comarapa location in Bolivia'.
description
Parodia comarapana usually grows individually sunk deep into the ground. The shoots are up to 5 centimeters and 8 centimeters in diameter. The 18 to 20 ribs are divided into cusps. The areoles are white. The 18 to 23 radial spines are thin, yellow with a brownish tip and 0.3 to 2 inches long. The 3 to 4 central spines can hardly be distinguished from the radial spines.
The flowers appear near the apex. They are orange-yellow up to 2.5 inches long and 0.5 inches in diameter. The scar is orange. The spherical fruits are greenish white, pink at the base. They are dry and measure about 0.8 inches in diameter. They contain blackish brown seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Parodia comarapana is common in Bolivia in the departments of Cochabamba and Santa Cruz near Comarapa at altitudes between 1300 and 1900 meters.
It was first described in 1951 by Martín Cárdenas . Synonyms are Boliviocactus comarapanus (Cárdenas) Doweld (2000), Boliviocactus mairananus (Cárdenas) Doweld (2000), Parodia mairanana Cárdenas (1957), Parodia paucicostata (F.Ritter) Weskamp (1973, nom. Inval. ICBN article 34.1) and Parodia neglectoides F.H.Brandt (1973).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
