Martin Gerstmann

Martin von Gerstmann (born March 8, 1527 in Bunzlau , Duchy of Schweidnitz , † May 23, 1585 in Neisse , Principality of Neisse ) was Prince-Bishop of Breslau and Governor of Silesia from 1574 to 1585 .

Life

As the son of the cloth maker and Bunzlau mayor Christoph Gerstmann, Martin was raised Protestant and studied at the Brandenburg University of Frankfurt from 1549 . Around 1555 he enrolled at the University of Padua , where he also worked for the Fugger from 1556 . Joachim vom Berge stayed with him on his cavalier tour .

On May 28, 1561 he obtained the doctorate of the two rights IUD. In the same year he was custodian and canon of the Breslau cathedral and in 1568 chancellor of the Olomouc bishop. As the imperial councilor and secretary of Maximilian II , he was raised to the bohemian nobility in 1570 .

From 1570 to 1572 Gerstmann was secretary of the Latin expedition, where he was mainly responsible for correspondence with the Polish court . In 1573 he became educator of the Austrian Archdukes Matthias and Maximilian and was appointed Count Palatine .

After he had been dean of Breslau from 1571 , he was elected Bishop of Breslau in 1574. After the election, his nephew Christoph von Gerstmann († March 21, 1598) traveled to Rome as an envoy of the Breslau cathedral chapter - together with the Breslau canon Theodor Lindanus - to have the pope confirm the bishopric .

During his tenure in 1575 the seminary was relocated from Breslau to Neisse and in 1577 after a long break an auxiliary bishop was appointed. He made visitations in his diocese and held a diocesan synod in 1580 . In addition, the south tower of the Wroclaw Cathedral was expanded.

Martin von Gerstmann died in Neisse and was buried in the parish church of St. Jakob. Andreas von Jerin became his successor.

Martin's chancellor was Wenzel Cromer von Krippendorf from Jena . Cromer married Barbara Hiltprandt, sister of the Breslau canon Michael Hiltprandt. Their mother was a sister of the next but one Bishop Bonaventura Hahn .
