On August 28, 1993, a Yakovlev Jak-40 crashed during take-off on a Tajikistan Airlines flight from Chorugh to Dushanbe in the pundsch near Chorugh, killing 82 of the 86 occupants. It is the worst aircraft accident involving a Yakovlev Jak-40 and the worst in Tajikistan .

prehistory

As early as July 1993, the managing director of Tajikistan Airlines reported to the authorities that armed opposition groups were disrupting normal flight operations at Chorugh Airport.

plane

The plane was an 18-year-old Yakovlev Yak-40 with the air vehicle registration number EY-87995, the three engines of the type Ivchenko AI-25 was equipped. The plane was chartered to fly women, children and fighters to Dushanbe during the civil war in Tajikistan .

crew

The crew consisted of the flight captain Mels Sijarow, the first officer Juri Djomin, the flight engineer Nisomiddin Buriev, the navigator Yevgeny Babadschanow, and a flight attendant .

course

During the boarding of the passengers, several fighters suddenly approached and surrounded the aircraft and fired several shots to stop it. The fighters forced the passengers who were already seated in the plane to get out and independently decided who should get on the plane. The crew members tried to intervene, but they were pushed back by the fighters. Finally, there were 86 people, including 14 children, on board the aircraft, which was approved for a maximum of 32 passengers and here seats for only 28 passengers. As a result, the maximum take-off mass was exceeded by 3 t . The captain tried to explain this to the fighters, but they refused to see it. After that, the pilots refused to fly the plane until the fighters pointed their guns at them and fired a shot. Ultimately, the pilots were given the choice of either being shot on the spot or flying the overloaded aircraft. The pilots chose the latter. When the aircraft was on the runway, the air traffic controller gave clearance for take-off. During takeoff, the nose landing gear took off, but the aircraft did not take off. The pilots did not abort the start; the aircraft then shot over the end of the runway and the left main landing gear hit a flat embankment about 150 m behind the end of the runway. A further 60 m behind hit the right main landing gear leg a small bunker from concrete . Finally, at 10:46 a.m., the plane crashed into the Pandsch River near Chorugh and broke up. Shortly afterwards, the fire department and several ambulances arrived at the scene of the accident. Because of the fire, the doctors could not immediately start looking for survivors. Eventually six people, including four passengers, flight engineer Nisomiddin Buriev and one other crew member, were taken to the hospitals in Chorugh and Dushanbe, where Buriev died the following night from serious head injuries and internal injuries. The other crew member also died, while all four delivered passengers survived.

aftermath

After this incident, air traffic in Chorugh was suspended until the end of the Civil War.
