Sankt Radegund bei Graz (short: St. Radegund or just Radegund ) is a municipality with 2144 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Styria at the foot of the Schöckl around 15 kilometers northeast of Graz.

Geographical location

Sankt Radegund bei Graz is located in the Grazer Bergland in Eastern Styria approx. 15 km north of the provincial capital Graz. The community lies at the foot of the Schöckl (1445 m). Sankt Radegund lies in the headwaters of the Rabnitzbach , a tributary of the Raab .

With the Zwölferkogel (1192 m), the Erhardhöhe (1049 m) and the Hohenberg (1048 m) there are three other peaks over 1000 m in the municipality.

history

St. Radegund was settled by the Slavs in the 6th century. In the year 1186 a "little church" appears in the chronicle, a few decades later the parish of St. Radegund was also established. In the land registers, however, the founding of the parish is only noticed a hundred years later and the patron saint of the church is only mentioned as this in 1295. The name "Radigundtstarff" appears for the first time in a document from 1403.

St. Radegund as a health resort

The healing climate and the radioactive springs of St. Radegund were already known during the times of the monarchy, and so St. Radegund developed into a cold water and climatic health resort with a health resort, known far beyond the borders.

The official founding date is 1841, when the doctor August Demelius applied for permission to run a cold water healing facility.

The wolf heads refer to Radegundis who, according to tradition, fell victim to wolves, the wood sheep denotes the health resort.

Calvary

The St. Radegunder Kalvarienberg is one of the most beautiful folk calvary mountains in Austria. The path leads to 22 station chapels, the building sites of which were only won by rock blasting, up to the crucifixion group and Kalvarienbergkirche. The second large building houses the Holy Staircase , the 14 marble steps of which are decorated with relics and can only be climbed on your knees.

Novystein

The Novystein is a 20 meter high obelisk that stands on a 910 m high hill. He was born in 1883 for the spa doctor Dr. Gustav Novy erects and bears the dedication “To the benefactor of many suffering, the great master Gustav Novy, of grateful spa guests”.

Parish church

Today's parish church is a late Gothic building from the years 1490–1513. It contains late Gothic frescoes above the side altars and a Gothic ribbed vault on the ceiling. The church is dedicated to St. Radegundis . The first impression of the parish church suggests that it may be a former fortification.

Spring paths

The St. Radegunder Quellenwege connect 22 spring wells that were built in the 19th century. Many of the sources have given names of the noble ladies of the spa society, such as Bertha, Melanie, Katharina-Quelle.

The Hungarian Madonna fountain sanctuary was donated by Hungarian spa guests out of gratitude for healing successes. It wears a replica of the Hungarian royal crown (Stephanskrone).

Ehrenfels ruins

The Ehrenfels Castle was first mentioned in 1229. It served the Ehrenfelsern (from the family of the Lords of Graz) as a residence and to consolidate their possessions around Graz. The ruin is now privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.

Sports

Sankt Radegund and the Schöckl are popular local recreation areas for the urban population of Graz.

In the municipality there are numerous sports facilities - especially in the great outdoors: hiking , winter sports , paragliding , horse riding , mountain biking , tobogganing , downhill skiing , disc golf .

politics

The municipal council consists of 15 members. The 2015 municipal council elections brought about an overthrow of political forces. The until then leading SPÖ lost almost 23 percent of the votes and four mandates. Three of them went to the ÖVP, which has now taken over the absolute majority in the community with almost 63 percent, and one to the Greens.

Sankt Radegund is away from the main roads. The Weizer Straße (B 72) from Graz to Weiz is around five kilometers away. Sankt Radegund can be reached from Graz via a state road. The Pyhrn Autobahn (A9) is around 15 kilometers away and can be reached via the Graz-Nord junction (175).

There is no train station in Sankt Radegund. The central station Graz is about 18 kilometers away.

The distance to Graz Airport is around 27 kilometers.
