The Johann-Waller-Hütte is a mountain hut belonging to nature lovers on the Schöckl near Graz in Styria .

location

The hut is located in the Grazer Bergland , about 13 kilometers north of the city center of Graz , in the municipality of Sankt Radegund bei Graz on the border with Stattegg . It stands at 1166  m above sea level. A. on the southwest ridge of the Schöckl massif, between the Niederschöckl (approx.  1340  m above sea level ) in the north and the Zwölferkogel  ( 1192  m above sea level ) and Hohenberg  ( 1048  m above sea level ) to the south. Not far below is the Göstinger Forsthaus am Sattel zum Zwölferkogel (approx.  1080  m above sea level ).

History and construction

The hut was built in 1932 from a donation. Johann Waller was an employee of the Puchwerke founded in 1899 . One of his heirs bequeathed the Graz Tourist Association (TVG), at that time already the Graz group of nature lovers, a sum of 43,000 schillings (around 130,000 euros today). With this, the Spinnerwiese on Schöckl was acquired and a simple hut was built. The socialist-oriented nature lovers, who were close to the labor movement , were already under political observation of the incipient Austrofascism , the opening was prohibited by the authorities. Nevertheless, it took place on September 10, 1933, with over a thousand friends and in the presence of armed federal gendarme . In 1934 the Friends of Nature were banned in the corporate state and the hut and all the property of the Friends of Nature were confiscated. During the Nazi era , the hut was operated by the German Youth Hostel Association. The Waller hut could only be reopened for nature lovers after the war.

In 1976 the hut was renovated. It shows itself as a characteristic Alpenhütte between the wars, as one-storey, 15 m long, more compact construction in wood on Steinterrasse across a slope with a small vestibule and access veranda . A newer side wing is employed on the back.

Operation and tours

The Wallerhütte is open all year round on weekends and public holidays, and is run by the Graz section of Naturfreunde Österreich. It has 17 beds in 3 camps, a shared shower and a kitchen.

The hut can be reached via the Schöcklhöhenstraße , which is not far away, the former toll road has not been public since 1993. A private road leads from Steingraben to the Göstinger Forsthaus. The operating association cooperates with Stadtwerke Graz to use the numerous public transport in the Graz area.

The Johann-Waller-Hütte is one of 24 checkpoints on the Grazer Umland-Weg, which is also supervised by Naturefriends . Approaches, high paths and ascents are possible in a variety of ways thanks to the many forest roads in the Schöckl. Tours are:

The area is also suitable for mountain bike tours and avalanche-safe ski tours.
