Novystein

The Novystein is a memorial for the spa doctor Gustav Novy in St. Radegund near Graz . According to the inscriptions, the 20 meter high obelisk was erected in 1883 by grateful spa guests, Doctor Gustav Novy, the benefactor of many sufferers, the great master of the water healing method, on a 910 m high hill south of the Schöckl .

In 1883 a festival committee, the Moritz Ritter von Franck , Coloman von Gulcsi, Dr. Rudolf Schwingenschlögel and Lieutenant i. R. Ottokar Oliva, the doctor Dr. med. Gustav Novy to erect a memorial on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his doctorate. A 20-meter-high obelisk was erected on the 910 m high Fürwald (also called Kalkberg). There are dedicatory inscriptions on the base. One of the dedications reads: “All healing comes from God. Honor the doctor, for God created him. "

Gustav Novy

Gustav Novy, b. 1831 in Krumau in Bohemia , received his entire education in Prague, where he also obtained his doctorate. After a few years as a doctor in Hungary, he came to Graefenberg to see the water healing artist Vinzenz Prießnitz . In St. Radegund he was first assistant to the head of the health resort, Dr. Josef Schindler. At the beginning of January 1864, Novy took over the management of the health resort. Under the direction of Gustav Novy, the existing bathing rooms and much more were modernized. The medic also trained female and male bath attendants.

Soon many spa guests came to Gustav Novy and he became known worldwide. The reputation that Gustav Novy enjoyed as a doctor kept the number of spa guests increasing. While there were an average of 560 patients who visited the spa between 1880 and 1882, the number rose to 900 in 1883 and in 1886 had already reached over a thousand. The guests came from Croatia, Bosnia, Germany, Italy, Russia, Egypt and America. Gustav Novy died in 1896.
