history

First cable car

As early as 1950/1951, the first cable car to the Schöckl with what was then ultra-modern detachable gondolas based on the two-cable circulation principle of the Wallmannsberger system was built by Wiener Brückenbau und Eisenkonstruktions AG and opened on March 21, 1951. This runway was only the third runway built according to this principle developed in 1947. It had 40 4-person gondolas made of aluminum and wood. A trip over the 9 pillars and a top scaffolding took 14 minutes. The capacity was 600 people per hour. The cable car operated by the Grazer Stadtwerke leisure company was very popular, in summer with hikers, in winter with winter sports enthusiasts, when you could still ski down to the valley on skis.

North lift

Two years later, in 1953, a single chairlift from the Wolf and Switzeny company was built on the opposite north side of Semriach (1045 m) . The mountain station was not far from the cable car mountain station at 1438 m above sea level. The lift climbed 393 meters in altitude and was operated with the original equipment until 1985. The last pillars were only dismantled 20 years later, today only the station buildings remain. An armchair from the Nordlift has been preserved in the Vienna Technical Museum.

Competition with the toll road

Since the mountain was also accessible via a private toll road, the Schöcklhöhenstrasse , from 1964 , there was competition to the cable car. In recent years, skiing has only been possible at the top of the mountain. A profitable operation of a modern railway, which had to replace the outdated one, was only possible from 1993, when, after long controversies, the toll road was closed to private traffic - against an advance payment to the owner.

New building

In 1995 the cable car, which was completely out of date after 44 years, was completely rebuilt. The system was changed from a two-cable to a single-cable gondola with modern 6-seater panoramic cabins. The old silver-colored 4-seater gondolas were also sold to private customers. One of the old green supports was put up next to the entrance. A chargeable parking lot for 320 cars was built next to the valley station. Around 150,000 people are now transported annually. Today Schöckl Seilbahn GmbH is a subsidiary of Holding Graz Kommunale Services GmbH.

Infrastructure

There are restaurants in the two stations of the cable car, and two special gondolas are available for the disabled. Since the mountain is very popular with mountain bikers, there are separate gondolas for transporting bicycles.

A 1000 m long all-weather toboggan run with the name Hexenexpress was built at the mountain station, but for safety reasons it must not be operated when it is wet. The name refers to the Schöcklhexe , a weather witch who lives on the mountain according to legend. The descent leads in serpentines to the Halterhütte, from where the toboggans are pulled up again with a lift.
