Eduard Speck (born November 21, 1884 in Vienna , † November 3, 1973 in Graz ) was an Austrian local politician and mayor of Graz from 1945 to 1960 .

Live and act

The son of an officer in the army of the Danube Monarchy passed his Matura in Brno , studied philosophy and philology at the University of Vienna and then at the University of Innsbruck , where he received his doctorate in 1906 . During his studies in 1902 he became a member of the Arminia Vienna fraternity . From 1908 Speck worked as a high school professor for German literature, Latin, Greek and philosophy. From 1920 to 1934 and from 1940 to 1944 he carried out this activity in Graz, in the years in between he was banned from teaching for political reasons. Speck, who was initially more inclined to the “national” camp, had been a member of the Graz municipal council since 1924 as a representative of social democracy .

From May 16, 1945 to January 31, 1960, the mayor, initially appointed by the Russian occupation forces, performed his function. After the end of his term of office on February 18, 1960 he was elected honorary citizen of Graz. A special concern of Speck was the reconstruction of the Graz theaters and the school building. Gustav Scherbaum was his successor . The former mayor, who was interested in culture, received a memorial in 1974.
