Trichodina is a symphorionic genus from the group of ciliates .

description

The body is flat-cylindrical to disk-shaped. The hooks of the three-part hook ring, which is used to adhere to the ground and move, consist of straight or curved outer hooks, a thin, elongated rod-shaped, spiked or needle-shaped inner hook and a widened central part.

The adoral eyelash spiral, facing away from the ground and serving as a mouth opening, runs around the end of the body in a circle between 360 ° and 540 °.

Distribution and way of life

Trichodina species are found in standing and flowing fresh and salt water worldwide, with the exception of the Antarctic . They colonize the skin of fish, amphibians, moss animals and cnidarians , but also occur freely floating. In weakened fish, as weakness parasites, they can damage the skin in mass infestation and cause trichodiniosis . Like all ciliates, they filter particles from the water around them.

Taxonomy

The genus was first described by Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg in 1830 , the type species is Trichodina pedunculus . More than 170 species have been described for the genus, of which around 70 species are no longer recognized due to insufficient descriptions.
