Gottfried Prabitz originally wanted to become a horn player and therefore took lessons at the Graz Conservatory in the early 1940s . In addition to music, Gottfried Prabitz discovered his great interest in the visual arts during this time.

In 1945 he was drafted into the German Wehrmacht at the age of 18 and was taken prisoner in Yugoslavia shortly before the end of the war, from which he did not return until 1948. Back in Austria he completed the arts and crafts school on Ortweinplatz in Graz. He was shaped there mainly by the teachers Rudolf Szyszkowitz (painting), Alfred Wickenburg (painting) and Alexander Silveri (sculpture).

In 1950 Gottfried Prabitz began studying sculpture in the master class of Walter Ritter (sculpture) at what was then the Linz Art School (now the Linz Art University ) . Walter Ritter is without a doubt one of Gottfried Prabitz's most influential teachers. After completing his studies in 1954, Gottfried Prabitz returned to Gratwein, where he worked as a freelance sculptor until his death on July 15, 2015.

In 2007 Prabitz was awarded the professional title of professor .
