Paula Grogger (born July 12, 1892 in Öblarn ; † January 1, 1984 in Öblarn) was an Austrian writer.

Life

Paula Grogger was born as the daughter of the businessman Franz and his wife Maria Grogger in Öblarn in Styria . She attended from 1907 to 1912 in Salzburg teachers training college of the Ursuline in Salzburg. As one of the few women at the time, she passed the Austrian matriculation examination, the Matura . She then returned to Styria and taught handicrafts at some schools in the Ennstal until 1929 .

Her first novel Das Grimming Gate (1926) was a triumphant success and paints a picture of the Styrian landscape with the symbol of the Grimming Mountain . The style, so the criticism, is simple, dialect and yet powerful. Trained by Handel-Manzetti , Grogger's novel is still independent, with hearty humor, restrained tragedy and is set high above the usual local literature. The book has been translated and reprinted several times.

Paula Grogger belonged to the illegal Nazi association of German writers in Austria . After the " Anschluss of Austria " in 1938, she paid homage to Adolf Hitler in the confessional book of German poets . However, when the Gestapo asked the District Administrator of Gröbming regarding Grogger's political stance , he replied on November 6, 1939:

“She never had anything to do with the National Socialist idea and did nothing to decide the popular struggle in Austria in favor of Greater Germany. [...] One thing became known from Berlin, according to which she had the opportunity to be introduced to the Fiihrer during the illegal period during a stay in Berlin, which she refused. [...] To this day, it has not contributed anything positive to National Socialism. "

In 1952 she was awarded the Peter Rosegger Prize of the Province of Styria. In 1966 she was appointed professor . In 1968 she was awarded the poet's stone shield of the Dichterstein Offenhausen association, which was banned in 1999 because of being re-employed by the National Socialists . In addition, she received other honors, such as the Enrica Handel Mazzetti Special Prize , the Silver Archduke Johann Plaque and the Ring of Honor of the State of Styria.

The deeply religious woman, who was interested in folklore all her life, also made an outstanding contribution to amateur play .

In 1980 she stopped writing at the age of 88 and died at 91 in her house in Öblarn, which still serves as a museum today.
