Historical association for Styria

The Historical Association for Styria is an Austrian historical association that was founded in 1850 under the patronage of Archduke Johann and deals with the research and communication of the Styrian regional history.

In 1843, the Benedictine priest and university professor Albert von Muchar and several other scholars founded the Historical Association for Inner Austria , the first chairman was the abbot of Rein Abbey . In 1850, the association was reconstituted under the name it still has today and moved into an office in the country house . The association's headquarters have been in the Styrian State Archives since 1906 . Initially, the association dealt primarily with the collection and recording of historical sources and historically significant objects, the popular education work was only gradually taken up. The archives of the association are now in the possession of the state archive, the archaeological finds - including the cult car from Strettweg - were given to the Joanneum . Today the association has around 1300 members and works closely with the scientific institutions in Styria.

Club activity and publications

The historical association holds lectures and seminars and organizes study trips. As part of regional studies courses at schools and adult education institutions, an examination can also be taken which - if successful - leads to the award of the Josef Wartinger Medal .

The following organs are published regularly:

  • The journal of the Historisches Verein für Steiermark has been published since 1850 (until 1906 as Mittheilungen des Historisches Verein ) in the form of a yearbook which, in addition to scientific articles and reviews, also publishes club news.
  • The Blätter für Heimatkunde has been published four times a year since 1923 and contains shorter essays on the history, folklore and archeology of Styria.

In addition, special volumes of the magazines and other book publications appear at irregular intervals.
