Josef Wartinger (born April 21, 1773 in St. Stefan bei Stainz ; † June 15, 1861 ) was the founder and first director of the Styrian State Archives and was commissioned by Archduke Johann on August 29, 1811 to collect the historical sources of Styria . Wartinger donated a silver medal as early as 1815, with which the best student in the country's history is ceremoniously honored every year by the Historical Association for Styria .

Life

After attending grammar school in Graz , he completed philosophical and legal studies at the Graz Lyceum in 1798 and entered the political civil service with the Styrian governorate in 1799. In 1801 he was appointed high school professor in Marburg . In 1805 he retired to Graz for health reasons, where in 1806 he was entrusted with the chair of world history at the grammar school. In 1810 he entered the service of the Styrian estates, where he was promoted to registrar and archivist in 1812. In this function he founded the Archives of Styria on behalf of Archduke Johann.
