The Messendorf Castle is located on the St. Peter's main street in the district Messendorf in the eighth Grazer district St. Peter . The building, which was formerly used as a special regional hospital for psychiatry and neurology, currently houses the Graz Waldorf School .

history

The history of the castle can be traced back to the 13th century, when a knightly family settled in what was then Mezzendorf around 1233 and named themselves and the farm after the village. The original building was also called Breunerhof and Freischloss . When Messendorf Castle became the property of the Weißenegger family in 1479, it was first mentioned in a document.

From 1568 it was owned by the Counts of Lengheimb, who expanded it into a palace in the style of the late Renaissance . The Lengheimb family sold the "Siz Mesßentorff" together with the Meierhof to Countess Josefa Breuner, until in 1802 it became the property of the Trauttmansdorff family. The castle was adapted as a brewery. After 1865 the state of Styria took over the property and used it as a forced labor house. In 1934/35 the Messendorf detention camp was located in the castle. A special state hospital for psychiatry and neurology was later set up until the Graz Waldorf School moved into the premises in the 1980s.

Little has been preserved of the castle's original furnishings. The old building has a clock-gable roof from 1802. The stone window frames date from the 17th century. The former mess chapel was consecrated to Saint Vincent de Paul . On the altar sheet, the saint is depicted with a view of the castle. It was created in 1871 by the knight von Kurz zu Thurn und Goldenstein.
