Detention camp Messendorf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The detention camp Messendorf (also not arrest Messendorf ) was a detention camp of Austrofascism in Messendorf in Styria .

description

In February 1934, the forced labor facility of the Steiermärkische Landesverrenanstalt Feldhof , which was housed in Messendorf Castle, was converted into a detention center. The camp was only intended for short-term stays for up to 500 people; in the case of longer prison sentences, the camp was only used as a stopover in the Wöllersdorf detention center . On the morning of July 26, 1934, SA groups from Graz attacked the camp in order to advance to Graz together with the liberated detainees as part of the July coup . However, the security team was able to quickly drive away the attackers, so that the plan failed.

“All of Europe knows the shame of Oranienburg and Dachau; Messendorf and the Karlau are in no way different from the notorious concentration camps of the Third Reich. "

- Arbeiter Zeitung, June 23, 1935

The detention camp was dissolved at the end of December 1935 and again part of the Feldhof insane asylum.
