Reinthal Castle
The Reint (h) al Castle is located on the territory of the municipality Hart bei Graz in the district of Graz environment in Styria . The current owner of the castle is Johann Höllwart (as of April 2020).
history
The castle was built by the Schrannen advocate Bartholomäus Rues in 1545. He needed his coat of arms there, which has also formed the basis for the coat of arms of the municipality of Hart bei Graz since 1996.
In the Middle Ages, the castle served as the service yard of Rein Abbey . From the 16th century it was used as a noble seat . After changing owners several times, including Pranckh , Teuffenbach , Lengheimb and Ludwig von Benedek , the property has been owned by the City of Graz since 1967.
layout
The closed four-wing complex with a square inner courtyard has its oldest components in the west wing. Due to the numerous owners, the castle has undergone a number of structural changes. The west wing was designed by Bartholomäus Rues as a free-standing Renaissance building, extended by other owners in the late Baroque, with the Biedermeier roof bay with clock on this west facade rounding it off. The pillar arcades were walled up over time; the round corner tower still visible in an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer no longer exists. The square shape that appears today with a small inner courtyard only emerged as a result of building activity in the following centuries. In the 19th century, a square corner tower was added to the structure and a chapel was installed on the upper floor.
Remarkably much of the original interior has been preserved. During renovation work, Secco paintings were uncovered, which date from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 19th century, as the monument office has determined.
Todays use
The forest and field paths around the castle serve the local population of Hart bei Graz as a recreational area.
