Vy , officially Vygruppen AS , is the largest transport company  in Norway  and as a railway company operates most of the trains on the railway lines in Norway as well as regional trains in Sweden and also long-distance buses throughout Norway and Sweden. Vy belongs to the state of Norway and is subordinate to the Ministry of Transport ( Samferdselsdepartementet ).

Until April 23, 2019, Vy Norges was called Statsbaner AS (NSB, Norwegian State Railways).

Norges Statsbaner AS emerged in 2002 from the limited liability company Norges Statsbaner BA .

Statsbanene (with a capital S ) is an older and actually unofficial name of the Norwegian State Railways (NSB) and its predecessor.

The term refers to the railroads of the early days in Norway, over which the state had a dominant influence through a share majority or which were purely state-run railways established by the state. The first state railways were Hamar – Grundsetbanen , Kongsvingerbanen and Trondhjem – Størenbanen , whose construction was decided on September 3, 1857 and which opened between 1861 and 1864. On paper, these first state railways were administratively separate units with their own accounting and were operated as larger units based on geographical terms. It was not until March 1, 1883 that De norske statsbaner were set up as an independent organization with a central management in Christiania. Lorentz Henrik Müller Segelcke was the first general director until 1899. The name Norges Statsbaner can be traced back to 1885, as can the abbreviation "NSB".

By 1890, all state railways were built as share railways with private and public shareholders. If there was profit, a dividend was paid. However, through its majority stake, the state had full control over these companies. After 1890 this system was discontinued and the state built, through the Det store jernbanekompromisset vom Storting, decided to add its own railway lines instead of contributing to the construction. At the same time it was decided to gradually transfer the old stock railways to the state. This process was completed in 1921. From 1921 to 1996 Norway's rail network (except for a few private lines) was managed by the state-owned company Norges Statsbaner (NSB).

In 1996 it was split into the infrastructure company Jernbaneverket (today Bane NOR ) and the operating company Norges Statsbaner BA . The freight traffic from the old company was continued under the NSB Gods company .

On July 1, 2002, the limited liability NSB BA was converted into a stock corporation. In the same year, technical maintenance and workshop services were outsourced to the newly founded Mantena stock corporation , which was fully owned by NSB until July 2017. NSB Gods took over the express and general cargo traffic, which was converted to the CargoNet corporation.

NSB had a lot of problems in the early years of the new millennium. The collision of two trains near Åsta on January 4, 2000 with 19 deaths, a lack of locomotive drivers, frequent delays, problems with the supply of spare parts and with new vehicles created a bad reputation. Handelshøyskolen BI conducts an annual customer satisfaction survey (Norsk Kundebarometer) with Norwegian companies.

In 2016, NSB's vehicles were relocated to the state-owned company Norske tog , while ticket sales and timetable information began at the state-owned company Entur .

On March 12, 2019, NSB announced that the company would be renamed Vy . Vy means "outlook, distant view, prospect" and is intended to show that the company has a vision for the future. The new name Vy was also adopted by other NSB subsidiaries, so that the new brand now describes one of the largest transport groups in Scandinavia. The name was officially changed on April 24, 2019. In addition to new paintwork for buses and trains, the group's almost 8,000 employees will also receive new uniforms.

Vy mainly provides passenger transport services. For this is for the long-distance routes Vy Regiontog and for the local transport Vy Lokaltog responsible. There are also subsidiaries for other areas that are wholly or partially owned by NSB:

  • CargoNet : was established in 2002 on the basis of the NSB Gods company. Until 2010 55% of the capital was owned by NSB, the rest owned by the Swedish Green Cargo , since then entirely with NSB / Vy

According to the 2014 annual report, around 68.5 million travelers took the NSB.

On January 4, 2012, NSB and the Ministry of Transport signed an agreement on the ordering of transport services for passenger transport from NSB for the period from 2012 to 2017, which contains the routes served, the train frequencies and other details. As part of the current tenders, Vy has only won one (Traffikkpakke Vest) of the three transport packages already awarded.

In 2018 NSB and NSB Gjøvikbanen carried around 70 million passengers.
