The five electric railcars of the Sihltalbahn (SiTB), which were purchased in two tranches between 1968 and 1971, are referred to as the Sihl Valley Railway BDe 4/4 . They were numbered 92-96 and were referred to as "quintuplets" by the company, as they each had a coat of arms from one of the five Sihl valley communities. The Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ) also procured two practically identical railcars in 1968 and 1980 for their standard-gauge Porrentruy – Bonfol line .

History

Originally it was planned to convert the railcars 92 and 93 from the BDe 2/4 83 and 84. This was provided for by ordering a new car body , which would then have been assembled in the company's own workshop. They got away from that and did not order a kit, but a complete railcar. Some of the parts ordered were installed in the new railcars. They received incandescent lamp lighting and pantographs , only the last three received tube lighting and a single- arm pantograph ex works . In 1975 the first two vehicles were adapted to the last ones delivered.

They received the coats of arms of the five neighboring communities together with the community names in 1971:

With the introduction of the new UIC numbering, they were given the numbers 576 592 - 576 596.

Technical

Due to the initial conversion plans, the railcars are very weakly motorized with 640 kW and the maximum speed was left at 70 km / h. Only one remote control and no multiple control was installed. It was not possible to increase the tractive effort by using two vehicles in double traction. The subsequent installation plans for a multiple control failed because of the high costs.

Since the vehicles in principle always traveled with control cars in planned operation, it was decided to leave a driver's cab. For this purpose, the driver's desk was removed on one side and installed in the newly delivered Bt 184–197 control cars. Only No. 92 kept both cabs so that special missions could be carried out with him.

Jura courses

BDe 4/4 101 of the CJ in Bonfol.

On the Porrentruy – Bonfol stretch of just 11 km , the CJs have been using Te III with two-axle wagons since electrification. In order to cover the basic offer with modern vehicles, the CJ was able to join the first SZU order with a multiple unit and a control car (BDe 4/4 101 and Bt 121) through the coordination of the Federal Office for Transport. In the railcar, however, an entrance was omitted and the luggage compartment was enlarged. In 1980 the CJ were able to purchase a second identical multiple unit (BDe 4/4 102). After a collision with an SBB shunting locomotive, the CJ replaced its control car with the Bt 996 of the SZU (new Bt 921). In 2013 the CJ railcar 102 was scrapped, number 101 is still used as a reserve vehicle during the school holidays. It bears the TSI no. 94 85 7 576 101-0 CH-CJ.

Operational

After commissioning, they took over most of the scheduled passenger traffic until the Re 4/4 was delivered . After all six Re 4/4s had been delivered, the multiple units were scrapped one after the other.

Whereabouts

The BDe 4/4 No. 92 has been preserved as a historic vehicle. He is the only one who has kept both driver's cabs and can therefore be used as a solo driver. Today it is owned by the Zürcher Museums-Bahn (ZMB) and is drivable, it has the TSI no. 94 85 7 576 092-1 CH-ZMB

StB ET 15

In 1996 the BDe 4/4 93 was sold to the then Steiermärkische Landesbahnen , today Steiermarkbahn (StB) , which under the name ET 15 (or 94 81 4481 015-7 A-STLB) as a reserve vehicle for passenger traffic on the S 11 begins. Until 2014, the SZU logo and the Zurich route map were not removed from or from the vehicle. At the end of 2014, however, the railcar was re-covered and the SZU logo was replaced by the StLB logo. In 2015, after the accident between the two Stadler GTWs, the interior of the ET 15 was modernized and used again as planned. The railcar has had both driver's cabs again since 2011 and has been used without a control car since then. This is parked in Übelbach. In January 2017 , the pantograph of the railcar was replaced.
